Senate confirms Obama nominee, first Asian-American woman on an federal appeals court

Judge Jacqueline Nguyen, US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals
Nominated By President Obama, September 22, 2011
46 years old

This afternoon, the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of federal Judge Jacqueline Nguyen to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Jacqueline Nguyen came to America with her family after the fall of Saigon. They lived for a time in a tent city at Camp Pendleton.

Nguyen worked with her parents cleaning a dental office and helping out in their North Hollywood donut shop. During a confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Nguyen said her life experience informed her judicial temperament, telling the committee the experience gave her "an appropriate sense of humility" when she reviews the facts of each case.

"I have an understanding and appreciation of how intimidating the court system can be," she said.

2. I'm happy to see that none of the republican female sentors voted against her.

I wonder where Murkowski was since she wasn't there to vote.

I have my eye on her.
I've been watching her to see how she votes on all the women's issues and female nominees

4. Pat Toomey voted no. OMG!

He is such a horse's ass. Why the heck does this state continue to elect useless politicians like Toomey and Santorum to represent us?

I can't even stand it...

5. With as many Vietnamese-Americans as there are in LA, Vitter voted against Nyugen?

Yeesh.

91-3. I'm trying to find out how long her nomination has been held up.

ETA: July 31, 2009. Almost three years.

And then she was confirmed 91-3.

7. You have a bit of confusion there - it was less than one year

She was first a nominee for the DISTRICT court and was confirmed. (United States District Court for the Central District of California)

Then September 22, 2011 Obama nominated her for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia.org

Federal judicial service

On July 31, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Nguyen to a seat on the United States District Court for the Central District of California, vacated when Nora Margaret Manella left the federal judiciary to join the California Courts of Appeal in 2006. Senator Dianne Feinstein had recommended Nguyen's nomination.[6] On September 23, Nguyen appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which reported her nomination on October 15. On December 1, 2009, the full United States Senate voted 97-0 to confirm Nguyen.

On September 22, 2011, Barack Obama nominated Nguyen to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. She is the first U.S. district judge appointed by President Obama who was later nominated to a higher level federal judgeship by the same president. She is also the first Vietnamese-American Article III judge in the history of the United States, and the first Asian-Pacific American female Article III judge in California history.

The Senate confirmed Nguyen to the Ninth Circuit in a 91-3 vote on May 7, 2012. She currently is awaiting her judicial commission for the Ninth Circuit judgeship.
