Feeling hopeless, huh, 'cause it's already too late? IT'S EARTH DAY...DO SOMETHING GREEN!

At least go here to sign the petition. Sure, it's a hopeless gesture, but when hope dies, we die.

The climate petition to save the planet

Sign up! Join the largest climate petition to save the world. Tell local, national and international leaders to phase out carbon.
Scientists warn us that climate change could accelerate beyond our control, threatening our survival and everything we love.

We call on you to keep global temperature rise under the unacceptably dangerous level of 2 degrees C, by phasing out carbon pollution to zero. To achieve this, you must urgently forge realistic global, national and local agreements, to rapidly shift our societies and economies to 100% clean energy by 2050.

Do this fairly, with support to the most vulnerable among us. Our world is worth saving and now is our moment to act. But to change everything, we need everyone. Join us.

I was one of the kids in my junior high school that put on a roving show to the various classes to raise awareness. Swear to god, I can still remember the song we made up:

(Sung to the tune of "On Wisconsin&quot

Fight pollution, fight pollution
Cleanness is our aim!
We don't want this awful mess to
Put our name to shame!

(Fight, fight, fight)

Fight pollution, fight pollution
Help our land stay clean!
Fight for the right to call this
Our Clean Dream!

(Why I can remember that after forty-odd years when I'm lucky to remember where the car keys are these days is one of those Sweet Mysteries of Life)

The saddest part is how your message has been so little heeded in the intervening years.

That t-shirt you see around with "I can't believe I still have to protest this" is so true. So much of what we are arguing about now was known in the 70's, but the country chose to embrace Reagan and stick their collective heads in the sand. Which is one reason I reamain skeptical that the new century has brought a wake-up call: we can go right back to sleep anytime. 40-year snooze bar, anyone?
