Fox Celebrates Holidays With Outrageous Race-Based Attack On Obama

http://mediamatters.org/blog/201112230001?frontpage

December 23, 2011 12:26 am ET by Solange Uwimana

Fox News' animosity toward President Obama, three years into his presidency, is by now well-known. This is the network that routinely calls Obama a socialist, accuses him of being involved in all sorts of conspiratorial plots, and claims that he hates America. But, as witnessed Thursday on Hannity, Fox's attacks have taken an increasingly racially charged tone: Brent Bozell, who runs the factually challenged outfit of conservative misinformation known as the Media Research Center, likened Obama to "a skinny, ghetto crackhead."

Bozell appeared on Hannity as part of the show's weekly "Media Mash" segment to talk about purported mainstream media failings. After listening to a clip of MSNBC host Chris Matthews saying that Newt Gingrich "looks like a car bomber," Bozell responded:

BOZELL: How long do you think Sean Hannity's show would last if four times in one sentence, he made a comment about, say, the President of the United States, and said that he looked like a skinny, ghetto crackhead? Which, by the way, you might want to say that Barack Obama does. Everybody on the left would come forward and demand he be fired within five minutes for being so insulting towards a leader of the United States.

he's a Mandibular Masturbator. Always jerking off at the jaws. The man just never shuts up and goes on and on and on with his questions, never letting the person being asked the question to answer. I generally change channels when he comes on. I can't understand why MSNBC has him on at 1700 and again so quick on 1900. Smercomish is much better than Tweety even though he is kind of right-leaning.

I frequently sit watching him and I yell at the TV "Shut up, Matthews!" I can't stand the fact that he's on twice a day and so close together. MSNBC needs to replace him at 6pm (when he's first on in MST.) I, too, change the channel.

but he is very informative, asks penetrating questions and gets great responses from his guest.

And fox news commentators, contributors or guest will spew their right-wing vitriol-racist-hateful-bigotry regardless of what Chris Matthews does. Part of it is them throwing red meat to the fox news viewers; the other part of it is a release valve to help alleviate the excruciating psychological pain and misery of see a Black man in the White House running the country.

And I too wish Chris would shut up with the name calling. Ed Schulz crosses the line at times too. It doesn't help our cause.

the right has been able to push our side around, yell us down and win many arguments not on substance, but on perception.

I want the people who fight for the things that I believe in to be able to get down in the mud and give as good as they get. And calling someone stupid, ignorant or describing them in the context of comparing their behavior to someone or something is a far cry from using racist epithets.

If you are a Democratic Party advocate, you understand that advocacy comes with the territory on MSNBC programs hosted by Democrats. If you don't like opinion/talking head news shows, don't watch them.

It's not like it's a secret that you're going to get that sort of thing when you turn on the channel. The difference between MSNBC and Fox is that Fox gets racial and sexist, and they don't place a high priority on telling any truths along with their spin.

Newt doesn't look like a car bomber. It was a completely off-base thing to say. However, Bozell's is poignant in that he's trying to tie Obama to what he *might* be: a thin crackhead. So indeed, Bozell's comments are more inflammatory, as it tries to paint a picture of Obama close to his physical resemblance.

There's a disconnect with regards to Newt and a car bomber. The pejorative can be interpreted as a meaningless exaggeration because Newt is not some thin, dark skinned, bearded arab looking guy with a headdress and ratty clothing.

Now, Obama also doesn't wear ratty clothing, but he is black, he is thin, he has used drugs in the past, and he may have lived in lower-income areas during his life. So the pejorative hits closer to home in Obama's case.

Again, another example of the Right's inability to see nuances.

I think that one of the reasons right-wingers like Brent Bozell hate Barrack Obama is that he's an intelligent, collected, self-confident Afro-American who doesn't match the usual right-wing templates for Afro-Americans and who clearly ISN'T in their corner.

Right-wingers LOVE to claim that they aren't really racists. However, their behavior is much more accurate and truthful about their REAL thinking patterns than their polemics.

Car bombers are (usually) much younger, leaner and darker.

So this comparison is not valid.

hannity and others are constantly making foul, ignorant comments about the President, and Gingrich is not the President...and thankfully never will be. matthews' comment was out-of-line also, but calling the President a "skinny, ghetto crackhead" is racist tripe. and claiming that hannity would be punished for spewing racist garbage is also bullshit. sorry, bozo, but you rw fuckers get away with all manner of racist, sexist, homophobic misinformation all day every day. and none of you ever "lose" a damn thing, so quit your whining.
