Rubio.
He's young, he has some experience, he speaks well, he has good back story, not unlike Obama.
He's a fresh face.
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss him.

(14,449 posts)Well the water thing is funny but when things get serious the water thing will fade and real issues will emerge. A little water humor for a day or two won't distract the real goal of ensuring he does not make it to the White House.

It will be interesting when the debates get here.

(31,464 posts)He mispronounces and has to repeat every other word, especially those that are supposed to be his key applause lines. If only half of the flubs can be dismissed as "Freudian slips," he's still screwing up the other half. I didn't expect to like this speech, but I didn't expect it to be this horrible, either.

(56,177 posts)Because thye're both known on a more local basis...someone as stupid and incoherent in public like Rubio will have trouble making people unfamiliar with him want to vote for him.

(41,832 posts)but he doesn't stand a chance. Too many Republicans don't like him, he doesn't have enough money, and he isn't crazy enough.

(73,524 posts)It's not a good idea to dismiss any of the republicans.
The reasons you noted are solid reasons to NOT dismiss Rubio. While I expect he would get the VP nod with any republican but Jeb, I think he would get more votes for the ticket than the average VP candidate.
Thank you for this.

On edit: How is pointing out unfounded concern "dog shit". This OP is very weak and seems to be fishing for fear where there should be none.

(73,524 posts)put that in context. I do not believe that "one voice" is saying that she/he thinks that their stories are similar, much less the two men are. Rather, the media has been saying that Rubio has an appeal to republicans, similar to what Senator Barack Obama's appeal was to human beings in 2007-08. That can be true, without it meaning that the character of the two men are similar.
NightWatcher
(39,343 posts)He has ZERO appeal down here to republicans and only beat Charlie "What Party am I" Christ for a Senate spot.

I'm a huge fan of President Obama's and would never compare him to the likes of Rubio.

(20,043 posts)I voted for President Obama twice. I think he did a good job as president.
I thought Rubio ripped Obama and tried to play 'the only in America' card. He's not to be trusted---he used his dead dad...etc....
I do have concern, real concern, I don't want a republican in the white house EVER.
NightWatcher

(15,800 posts)He's better known than Obama was, been covered more extensively than O was prior to announcing. (53,936 posts)Remember Bush? DU hadn't been born, but I remember reading how he wasn't a real contender and Gore was a shoe-in. How'd that go? You are correct not to dismiss anyone because, sadly, when it comes to voting, it seems the crazier the candidate on the right, the more the right is energized; parts of the left are often too busy trashing their own candidate to notice.
BlueStater
(7,596 posts)You mean his four years as a senator where he's accomplished absolutely nothing of note?
I don't dismiss anybody, but the man is a total empty suit. I find it ironic that he's presenting himself as a candidate of the future when all of his viewpoints, from Cuba to gay marriage, are completely stuck in the past.
And, personally, I have never once found him impressive as a speaker. The media is obviously seeing something I don't.

Capt. Obvious
(9,002 posts)Why? Rubio is both electable and conservative, and in optimal proportions. Hes in a position to satisfy the GOP establishment, tea party-aligned voters and social conservatives. In fact, Rubios argument for the GOP nomination looks a lot like Walkers, and Rubio is more of a direct threat to the Wisconsin governor than he is to fellow Floridian Bush.
To win a presidential nomination, you need to make it past the party actors (i.e., elected officials and highly dedicated partisans). You can have all the strong early poll numbers in the world (hello, Rudy Giuliani), and your candidacy can still fail if party bigwigs come out against you. Rubio has a real chance of surviving or even winning the invisible (or endorsement) primary.
Rubio doesnt have the flaws the other two official GOP candidates have. Hes a hawk on foreign policy (with an 89 percent conservative foreign policy score in National Journals vote ratings), so hell be able to avoid the pitfalls of Rand Pauls candidacy. And Rubio isnt anywhere near as extreme as Ted Cruz and has not alienated his fellow senators, so we shouldnt expect mainstream party members coming out of the woodwork to stop Rubio. But hes a solid conservative; statistical ideological ratings put him right in line with the average Republican in the 113th Congress.

(26,582 posts)He shouldn't be easily dismissed. He's one of the stronger candidates in the GOP field. It seems people fear a Bush-Rubio split in the primary voting. I also wonder when Walker is going to jump in. A friend of mine really thinks Walker will win the nomination over Bush.
