(14,255 posts)matter what. Unless someone in DC gets all power-mad and decides to make Latin America our colony instead of our back yard. And starts a war with China. The US has been pursuing a path of military engagements and supporting rulers who suit us. The World Bank and IMF have been pursuing building things like China has, but with onerous conditions designed to ruin countries in the name of profits.
Unregulated capitalism and untrammeled MIC were never going to result in a happy and just world. IMO.

(2,097 posts)The US had this idea over 100 years ago and decided Panama was a better location, for a host of reasons. If China wants to build the canal we decided was inferior, let them.
And with the Middle East on fire, Russia in Ukraine, and the Afghanistan draw-down stalled, how on earth would a foreign affairs issue as obscure and speculative as this matter in 2016?

(6,262 posts)It is terrible environmentally. It gives a China an even bigger footprint in Middle and South America. Perhaps we have ascertained that it can't be built and will drain their coffers substantially. But Nicaragua is no longer influenced by us.

(30,481 posts)Other than that, I have missed the rash of posts on the topic that have sunk to the bottom of the du canal. Seems like it could be an environmental disaster. Go Nicaragua and China.

(30,481 posts)Can you at least describe how you think it will be a big issue in the 2016 race? I can't figure out how it will be an issue, much less a big one.

(30,481 posts)"The deal included". The time for great concern was during the bidding process or lack thereof. Other countries are allowed to negotiate. I know. The horror.
