The shooting was justified. The cop was fearing for his life.

That's what the storyline would be.

I expect it is common knowledge among some police forces that you can get away with murder - very easily.

It's striking that the killing in Ferguson, which was fairly similar to this (unarmed black man shot in the back), the cop was not charged with murder. And is such a short time, the national mood on this topic has changed so tremendously that this arrest was the obvious response.

It seems that the massive protests in Ferguson triggered a series of events, and a shift in public awareness, that led to this swift arrest.
