It's not only meat that's hogging water in California.

From their chart, it looks like chicken, pork, goat, and eggs all require far fewer gallons per ounce of food than chickpeas or lentils.

Also, when you hover the mouse pointer over one of the circles, it pops up the gallons per ounce, even for the smallest circles. And it has a link for the data at the bottom (but one has to be a real techie wonk to figure it out, so far I haven't decoded it) :
