Here's John, making excuses for Rush after taking $1M to play his wedding a few years ago, despite Rush's decades of hate:

“He sends me the loveliest e-mails,” said John. “What I get from Rush privately and what I get from Rush publicly are two different things. I’m just trying to break him down.”

So is the on-air Limbaugh just an act? The interview seems to suggest that. Traci Watson, who conducted the interview for USA Today, writes John believes that “his friend Rush Limbaugh doesn’t truly oppose gay marriage.”

2. Ole Rush doesn't believe that himself I'm pretty sure.

He's into broadcasting all the bigotry because it earns him the big bucks. I used to listen to him and get angry. But lately, every time he shows up somewhere I have to listen to him, I'm beginning to realize how cynical he is and how he's baiting the tapioca brained people who take him seriously.

He's nothing more than a latter days P. T. Barnum running a three ring circus for conservatives where there is a sucker born every minute. In real life he doesn't give a crap about what he bloviates about as long as his million dollar checks are in the mail.

I listen in and you can hear noticeable pauses in his delivery. He knows he is just playing the character that he has created. It's been most noticeable since his latest wedding.

The purpose of his program is to gather an audience so they'll listen to the advertisements and buy the products pitched therein. He'll say whatever he thinks will keep the marks tuned in to the show.

Stephen Colbert's character was an act, and he let you in on the joke time and again on his show. At his public appearances, Colbert distinguished himself from the character he played. Rush Limbaugh is either a performance artist beyond the level of Andy Kaufman, or he really, truly is a dick. He has gone long past the point where it doesn't matter.
