#PurviPatel... spare some indiana-targeted outrage...

for the poor women of color persecuted by this backasswards state #PurviPatel

please keep this up and help however you can

just got this from IRCRC...

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you so much for reaching out. This has been horrifying and few people have noticed.

1) Letters - for now Purvi is in South Bend jail, but will soon be transferred to Indiana Women’s Prison in Plainfield which is closer to where we live. So for now, we can collect letters and deliver them when she is transferred.

IRCRC
PO Box 723
Lafayette IN 47902-0723

2) Donations directly to her: https://rhrc.democracyengine.com/purvi-patel/contribute

This fund was set up specifically like this so that her current lawyer couldn't take a cut first.

3) For updates:

I'll add you to our eblast list. For most frequent updates, our Facebook page and twitter are all over this. https://www.facebook.com/ircrc?ref=bookmarks and Twitter is @ircrc and @MeagherCarolyn

There is also a new Facebook group for supporters that a local woman, Andi Trowbridge just started. https://www.facebook.com/events/424880191014799/

This is rapidly changing, xxxxx, and we really need people to care. We're having a big conference call today, but I expect that to be about immediate strategies for appeal.

With the current notoriety of Governor Pence and his Religious Freedom Restoration Act, we are working hard to make sure people know that anti-GLBT discrimination isn't the only thing in it that needs to be fixed. Faith-based oppression comes in many forms, and Judge Hurley in this case was his very first appointee. I think getting these conversations going everywhere is needed to start changing hearts and minds about the unhealthy way we treat pregnant women and pregnancy loss in our society.

Blessings,
Sue Ellen Braunlin

Fix It Now, indeed!

"Patel comes from a family of Indian immigrants who settled in Granger, Indiana, a suburb of South Bend. In July 2013, she showed up at the emergency room of St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in the town of Mishawaka, bleeding heavily. Doctors quickly realized she’d lost a pregnancy, and she confessed that she’d left the fetus in a dumpster. Patel became a criminal suspect and was later interrogated in the hospital after receiving surgery to remove her placenta."

"Patel’s defense argued that Patel, who’d gotten no prenatal care, had had a sudden miscarriage and that the fetus was not born alive. Much of Patel’s trial centered on the alleged gestational age of the fetus: Patel's defense argued the fetus was no more than 22-24 weeks old, and thus not viable even in a medical setting. Prosecutors argued Patel’s pregnancy was up to 30 weeks along and the baby had been born alive. Prosecutors did not respond to repeated requests for comment".

The judge in the case convicting Patel was Hate Monger Pence's first judicial appointment...no wonder Pence says his new anti-Liberty law will be interpreted "properly" by judges.....his judges!

http://www.pri.org/stories/2015-03-30/purvi-patel-faces-20-years-prison-feticide-and-child-neglect

"In addition to the charge of neglect, prosecutors later added a charge of “feticide” based on text messages found on Patel’s phone showing that she took miscarriage-inducing drugs purchased online. Toxicologists could not find any trace of such drugs in her body or that of the fetus, but the evidence was enough to convince a jury that Patel had committed feticide, a charge normally used against those who harm pregnant women, not pregnant women themselves.

Patel is the first woman convicted of feticide in Indiana, and only the second to be charged. Chinese immigrant Bei Bei Shuai faced feticide charges two years ago in the state, and both cases highlight an emerging “gray area” for pregnant women within the US legal system."

is the only thing they can charge her with, but politicians who think they're qualified to practice medicine have never listened to doctors or other people with real knowledge because god.

This is not going to survive an appeal. RU 486 only works before the ninth week of pregnancy, when a fetus is small enough to flush. Apparently this one was quite a bit older, meaning that even if she had taken the drug and it had shown up in her bloodstream (which it didn't), she'd have kept the pregnancy. Inconvenient medical facts like this will be considered in the appeal.

I don't know why so many men want to be tyrants over women. I only wish they'd get over themselves and knock it off.

but there are none that are particularly religious in a Roy Moore sort of way. Not necessarily the smartest lot either, so as a result their decisions can be inconsistent and hard to predict.

They convicted her of causing a miscarriage - killing a fetus.
They also convicted her of abandoning a baby.

You can't abandon a dead fetus. And if you're abandoning a baby, it isn't dead. We really need to give props to this prosecutor for managing to convict her on contradictory charges.

Our hearts are breaking! Purvi Patel is facing 20 years in prison for neglect of a premature baby, (This is the prosecutor's language.) born seconds to minutes of age, outside a hospital. The prosecutor, Mr. Roule, said that she left him to die on the floor. But no one seemed to appreciate that during those seconds, Purvi lay bleeding on the floor.

The sentence for feticide demonstrates that the application of the Indiana statute for feticide is being expanded for obstetric emergencies, unhealthy behavior and self-induced abortion with online or alternative abortifacents. And women of color are disproportionately impacted by laws that criminalize pregnant women.

Behind this trend (38 states have fetal homicide laws, created to protect pregnant women against violence but now being used to prosecute women) is the advance of religious tyranny that is also seen in #RFRA laws.

Those of us who have experienced pregnancy know of the myriad of feelings and physical changes that come with pregnancy. No woman should face criminal charges for having a pregnancy loss or seeking an abortion.

Purvi Patel will appeal her sentence.

Purvi was the sole supporter and care provider for her family, which includes her parents and ailing grandparents. If you would like to contribute to the family support fund , https://rhrc.democracyengine.com/purvi-patel/contribute

come to the conclusion that the fetus was born alive? If it was "born" stillborn, um, that's dead, right? How in the world does somebody get convicted for a miscarriage? They couldn't find any evidence that she took what they said she took to cause the miscarriage either. This whole case seems to be a miscarriage........of justice.

...There’s another reason Patel’s case deserves scrutiny. It has to do with how the prosecution went about establishing the fetus’s condition upon birth. At the center of its presentation was a method that involved removing the fetus’s lungs and placing them in a container of liquid in order to see if they would float. The theory behind the method, which was developed during the 17th century but has been questioned by modern medical experts, holds that if a lung does float, it means the baby drew at least one breath of air before expiring, and that if it sinks, the fetus was already dead by the time it left the womb.
The procedure, known as the “lung float test” or the “the hydrostatic test,” was carried out…
“It’s an absolutely discredited test,” said Gregory Davis, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Kentucky. “It boggles my mind that in the 21st century … this test is still being relied upon to determine whether a baby is born alive or dead.”...

Purvi did not deserve to be further horribly traumatized by the state after the trauma she experienced from miscarriage.

I had 5 miscarriages (due to Lupus), so 5 prison sentences for me!

Fuck those assholes!

This gop miscarriage crap has me in a tizzy. Miscarriage in itself is traumatic, but being accused of murdering the fetus when a miscarriage has occurred is beyond insane. Or fear if you miscarry you could go to prison, is barbaric.

be careful about making Purvi Patel into some kind of social tragic hero.

For 1, her family owns a restaurants in the south bend area and they live in an upscale home, she isn't the sole bread winner, in fact I believe she was living w/ her parents in their home.

2, she supposedly bought drugs over the internet to induce labor.

3, she lied to the hospital ER drs that she had been pregnant and given birth when being examined.

4, she left a dead baby in a dumpster and notified no one.

You don't like the law, thats 1 thing, but please don't hitch your wagon to this girl. I live in the area and have followed the case, something about her says something is off

the same with michael brown and others. it doesn't matter if they are heroes or flawed people. it's a matter of rights being violted.

I don't a fuck if the family owns a chain of restaurants from coast to coast.
