Indianapolis Mayor Defies State, Bans Religious Discrimination

On Monday, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard denounced Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act. This is a major victory for people who oppose the act on the grounds that it can be used by businesses to discriminate against LGBT people. Indianapolis is the largest city in the state, so Ballard’s condemnation, with the backing of the city’s local council, represents a large part of the state’s population and business interests. During a press conference, Ballard announced he has issued an executive order that requires any who receives money from the state to follow the city’s human rights ordinance. The ordinance nullifies the ability to discriminate against people. The Indiana Star reports on the story:

But it must take an extra dollop of something or other for a Republican Mayor to defy a homophobic law of one of the reddest states.

Respect for that.

3. So the back up position of the cons is to just let them permit little pockets of rural and small town bigotry?

How about a State-wide law against any form of discrimination based on race, color, religion, sexual orientation or creed applicable to All of Us?
