United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
Last July United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced that the organization would recognize and allow its staffers, who are in same-sex marriages, to receive equal benefits as those in opposite-sex marriages.
Russia has this week called for the UN General Assembly committee, which is responsible for administration and budgetary matters, to vote this Tuesday on its proposal to stop the policy, Reuters quoted diplomats, who had spoken on condition of anonymity, as saying.
Russia has been threatening to put the measure to a vote since December while the Organization for Islamic Cooperation had expressed their opposition to extending staff benefits to all same-sex couples.
Although the European Union and the United States have challenged Russia's position, the United States and other major powers don't have the power to veto votes in the General Assembly Fifth Committee, unlike in the UN Security Council.
Last year the policy was expanded to include same-sex couples married in a country where it is legal and not just the marriages of staffers who come from countries where gay marriage is legal.

countries rights. It's unfair IMO that they impose their homophobic views on other countries with gay rights.

where he's coming from.

"look at me, I'm Russia and big and tough and stuff and I hate gay people so NER" - fricken noobs.

(67,086 posts)6. There was one time when I thought Russia was getting to be more of a fun place, but then Putin
came along and has worked hard to make Russia obnoxious. Putin, has some serious issues going on, just his body posture is very revealing IMO. He's a jerk and a bully!

(7,804 posts)7. I've totally lost patience with him. He's an IDIOT. He thinks entirely in nebulous fuzzy crud.
I was originally somewhat impressed with the way he took on the cronyism in the Russian oligarchy but all this anti-gay stuff is pathetic.

has no admirer here and I'm among millions that think the same.
