Ohio man cleared of murder after 39 years in jail to get $1 million payment

http://news.yahoo.com/ohio-man-cleared-murder-39-years-jail-1-063803465.html

An Ohio man freed last year after spending 39 years in jail for a murder he did not commit will receive more than $1 million from the state for his wrongful imprisonment, court records show.

An Ohio Court of Claims judge on Thursday ordered that just over $1 million be paid to Ricky Jackson, the longest-held U.S. prisoner to be cleared of a crime.

"Wow, I didn't know that," Jackson told the Cleveland Plain Dealer, which said he learnt of the payment from a journalist.

"Wow, wow, wow, that's fantastic, man. I don't even know what to say. This is going to mean so much," he said.

$25,641 per year?!

I checked it yesterday, it's about 1/3 of what I earned my last year fully employed. Granted I'm an attorney (and worth SO MUCH MORE to society! ) but STILL, WTF!!! His FREEDOM worth only $25,641 per year???

It should be $10 million at the very, very least. At current interest rates $1 million deposited in a bank will get you about $10,000 per year if you don't dip into the principal (which at age 57 he probably should not do very much).

he'll still need the extra money. His working years were stolen from him.

I doubt he has enough SS credits to qualify unless they make special arrangements.

Money can't make up for the time that was stolen from him, but it might give him a fresh start for what is left of his life. One million is a paltry amount for what was taken from him, though.

Five million? Maybe. If I were a juror in a civil trial, that would be the absolute least I would argue for having most of his life stolen.

Did they subtract from the final amount his room and board? Also, doctor and dentist visits should be cleared before the guy picks up his due. Is there a number to phone where we can remind the authorities?

Scams will be rolling his way and after that long in prison - how will he know what is a scam

I sure hope someone honest is looking after him.
