IMO, Abolish voting would be easier to get than mandatory voting.

1. Maybe we could point out to the Republicans that Australia currently has a right wing government

... even with both mandatory voting and instant runoff voting in place, to help them feel more comfortable in voting for putting these in place, and perhaps along with that a newer constitutional amendment saying explicitly that we all have the right to vote, not just that we can't have our ability to vote be kept from being withheld on a discriminatory basis, which is what our laws currently have.
