(2,620 posts)the cartoon isn't quite analogous - as the president is commander-in-chief of the armed forces - not congress. Congress is a co-equal branch of govt.
What would be more accurate is if the cartoon depicted Lt. Cotton telling some troops from another unit to ignore their commander.

(81,212 posts)Glad you're here! Well, Mutiny, Treachery, Treason, Sedition - ANY of 'em work for me. I said somewhere else here that I wanna throw the kitchen sink at 'em. AND the fridge. AND the stove. AND the oven. AND the toaster oven. AND the blender. AND the garbage disposal. AND the ice cream maker. AND the coffee maker. AND I wouldn't stop at the kitchen, either. Next: all the furnishings in the BATHROOM!
The point is to accuse - and keep the enemy on defense. Load 'em down with all kinds of crap and every charge you can think of. With this cretinous bunch, most of those would probably apply anyway. Make 'em face it. Make 'em deny it. Make 'em have to deal with it. Make 'em have to deal with the questions and the annoying reporters who keep bringing this shit up. Make 'em stonewall and then we talk THAT up, too. I am still a big fan of the reputed LBJ tactic - from early in his career. I think it was during his first campaign for Congress that he accused his opponent of - um - sleeping with pigs. Of course it wasn't true. And he knew it wasn't true. But the point was - "make him deny it." The same philosophy as posing the question "when did you stop beating your wife?" Now, of course your target has not done such a thing. BUT - he has to get on the record saying no, which means the very concept of "...beating your wife" is now subliminally laminated to him. People will think of that unconsciously - the same way as they won't be able to avoid thinking of a pink elephant when you tell them specifically - "don't think of a pink elephant."
Psy ops. Devious shit. Playing dirty. You bet your sweet bippy! The bad guys play dirty on us all the time and we just fold like pieces of paper. I say we fight back - JUST as hard. And just as nasty.
I say we hijack that campaign slogan Miss Hog Castrator joni ernst used so successfully last fall - "let's make 'em SQUEAL!"

(660 posts)Ignoring that that was before my time, it is beyond treason, down right blasphemy even, to speak out against St Ron. I thought everyone knew?

(1,488 posts)... That don't apply to civilians, in an elected position or not.
Doesn't seem like a very apt comparison...

(81,212 posts)The message this cartoon attempts to send - IS delivered. People here get it, as you can see on this thread. People out there will get it, too, if they haven't already. This is a very effective cartoon as far as message delivery. Point MADE.

(4,835 posts)If it's not perfectly analogous because he is in the senate and the president is not 'their' commander. How about the disrespect toward the head of the senate committee that was trying to develop the republican controlled senate's official response. The guy who was trying to get senate democrats on his side.
He was disrespectful to the leadership of his own party too. The cartoon is an example of rogue soldiers, and rogue soldiers behave just like Tom Cotton did toward the country's political leadership with this letter.

(29,322 posts)Not just the military but any institution could probably be smoothly reformed with advice.
The second one actually says something much closer to the truth than maybe intended, it probably varies but I saw my "Platoon Leader" a lot but I never seen what he actually does. Certainly platoon sergeant who I had most of the time had much more military experience but NCOs seemed to be involved entirely in situations like this. The officers stayed in the officers, filling out the calender, planning stuff, ordering stuff, writing signatures on rank promotions, article 15s, award recommendations.
The Company Commander used to have who ever was recently arrested or failed a urinalysis tell everyone what they did in front of the next formation but this was stopped, I don't know officially why but this was very controversial even among the NCOs. A good point was he was having them making a public admission of something that may later be found not guilty of or making a public admission before the process has even played out.
Another time, redeploying a flying back. The Company Commander said prior to that he was giving us permission to drink booze during but the all the NCOs quickly told us we couldn't & mentioned regulations against drinking on duty & drinking in uniform. Even when he arrived in Germany (first refuel stop -- we had 3 as opposed to 1 on the way there for some reason -- other two stops were Iceland & Rockford, Illinois. CC said, "I don't know why you'd want to drink at (4 or 5) in the AM but you can drink" he goes into his officer corner NCOs quickly telling us no warning of us of the consequences and what the Company Commander said doesn't qualify as a defense. One in another platoon did buy a beer or something & there was an NCO chewing him out for. Someone discreetly bought a bottle of liquor in Iceland but nobody drank or risked NCO disobeying orders even though everyone's supervisor said something contrary to that.

(2,961 posts)And I'm stealing it to post on facebook. I realize it might present a difficulty to expell all 47 treacherous Republican Senators, but I see no reason why we can't get rid of the ringleader. He's only been there two months.
