For #DAYINMYSHOES!

I was a waitress years ago. Once I had a party of 4 people leave me a 4 cent tip. I wanted to chase after them and give it back, saying they needed it more than I did. It's a damn hard job and they deserve dignity and respect.

Thank you for your post, Steve.

I was waiting tables in Williamsburg VA. When the Carter/Ford debate came to town hotels and restaurants got real busy. The tips were nearly non-existent. When the foreign press was informed that gratuities were not included on the bill, they bent over backwards to apologize and became quite generous with the tips. The Secret Service, however, behaved as though we should pay them for the privilege; they were demanding, rude, and gave nothing more than a smirk.

Couple years later I was working a lunch counter in northern California, most of my customers being fishermen or lumbermen. My tip, one day, was a lovely fresh-frozen salmon; took it home, it provided dinner for six, two nights in a row. Nice!
