my choice Bill Maher
Orrex
(63,172 posts)He's not even in the same category of other worst choices. If the second-worst choice is a papercut, Maher is slow dismemberment with a dull and rusty hacksaw.
My $0.02.

(64,850 posts)Although i don't see Maher taking a daily gig, i have a very different view of Maher than you. We agree on lots, but not on this.
Orrex
(63,172 posts)For my money, Maher is the broken calendar who's right once every few years, but you have to wade through so much garbage in the meantime that he's simply not worth it. And he's not all that funny either, or at least not consistently.
I know that DU holds him in high esteem, but I've seldom found him to be more than a bitter, self-important contrarian. For that matter, his dubious embrace of anti-vaccination bullshit is enough to turn me off to him altogether.
But YMMV.
ProfessorGAC
(64,850 posts)He's anti FLU vaccine because he says the efficacy data is under 30%. He's not anti-vax with regard to DPT, and measles/rubella, et al.
I don't take my reading of medical data from him, so i don't much mind he is off base on that. But, he actually supports vaccination.
He just said so on his last show.

(63,172 posts)Which was my point.
He sort of frames it as some weirdo "personal sovereignty" issue, but in the end it's no different from any dumbass who doesn't vaccinate his kid because he's afraid of autism.
Amazingly, I know that this particular discussion about Maher has happened several times on DU over the years, so I searched for one of those and stumbled upon this one from just a few days ago. That means that he's consistent in his idiocy.
"I'm not an anti-vaxxer," he claims, but he's against vaccination. Where does that leave him, aside from talking out of both sides of his mouth?

(20,453 posts)Brian Williams is the punch line, right? We were just joking about that one yesterday

(182,603 posts)Maher isn't going anywhere. I hope it isn't Seth Meyer- he sucks.
I suspect it will be in house. Possibly the Egyptian guy he had on the night before the announcement show.

(182,603 posts)It was The Tonight Show or Letterman's spot or something.

(45,251 posts)I have a feeling, though, that Williams likes it where he is, despite the suspension. He gets paid very, very well. Stewart may make as much or more because he produces as well. I don't know.
What is Craig Kilbourne doing these days?
Alum Beth Littleford could be very good.
HappyMe
(20,277 posts)Bill Maher isn't funny and he's just tedious.

(21,528 posts)Would love to see her get the nod! I wanted her to take over for Colberts time slot

(7,719 posts)...George Carlin, but since he has passed, can't happen.
So, I am going with Lewis Black. He's the only one I can think of who has a good shot at making it work.
HappyMe
(20,277 posts)Lewis Black would be great.

(34,845 posts)The one who previously hosted the Egyptian version of TDS. In fact, could that have been why he was on TDS Monday?

femmocrat
(28,394 posts)Not sure if he would pull in the ratings as some of the others.
Chiyo-chichi
(3,573 posts)...but he is too big of a movie star now, so that is highly unlikely.
I'll throw a couple of other names out there that haven't been mentioned:
Paul F. Tompkins
John Hodgman
In any case, I'll miss Jon terribly. He is certainly at the top of his game.
femmocrat
(28,394 posts)They did a good job. I think those two are under-used.
John Oliver would be great, too, if he hasn't moved on since going to HBO.
Please, NOT Bill Maher. Once a week is enough.
bigbrother05
(5,995 posts)Jon could do outrage as well as any, but his gift was his sincere decency. Heard a discussion on Lawrence O'D last night that pointed out how he surrounded himself with characters, but he represented the "everyman" view of the news and the world at large. They do the satire and he would bring the laser focus on the central truths each day.
He will be hard to replace, he knew where to hold back for the truth to reveal itself and sink in for his viewers.

(29,615 posts)most of the above mentioned have already had their face on TV.....I want someone new. JMHO.
Renew Deal
(81,844 posts)Meyers: doesn't he have a new show on NBC?
Bee and Jones: Not sure how that would work an would probably be expensive for Comedy Central.
Williams would be great, but I'm not sure if he wants to do that. Timing is convenient and it would give the show instant credibility.
Maher: Absolutely not. He has heavy biases and is not nearly as talented as Stewart. Then again, Willmlre isn't nearly as talented as Colbert.
Gutfeld? No
McHale: Don't know a lot about him but he has a great resume.
Ferguson: He's a big star with an audience. Not sure if his talent fits the show.

(2,331 posts)I love Craig ferguson but he's not political enough for this. I'd like a woman. Lizz Winstead created the show, she should go back.
BarbaRosa

(41,103 posts)And he's fairly left for cable, too bad.
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)HBO and all that money in order to do 4 shows a week instead of 1? Makes no sense. Ferguson would be great, Mandvi is very amusing but I'm not sure how he'd hold up to the endurance test that is such a gig. McHale I like far more than I should but not sure it is a good fit.
Calista241
(5,585 posts)John Stewart is exceptionally funny and ridiculously smart. However, John Stewart took the show in a different direction from how the show started. Craig Kilborn was the original Daily Show host, and i personally thought he was extremely funny. However, his show was not focused on politics.
Doing a show about politics and making it funny is both risky and super hard to do. The network may decide, that in the absence of a comedian with John Stewart's ability, the show is in need of a change of direction. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the Daily Show changes drastically after John's departure.
Avalux
(35,015 posts)No one can ever be another Stewart, but I see no reason why CC would change the political comedy format. Especially now that Larry's new show follows The Daily Show and is heavily political.
A drastic change wouldn't be cost effective.
GeorgeGist
(25,311 posts)his first name is Jon.
Avalux
(35,015 posts)I'd love to see Samantha and Jason host the show. The others? Nope.
Stellar
(5,644 posts)He can be a little rough at times, but the others...I don't find entertaining at all. JMO!
eissa
(4,238 posts)And I thought Bassem Yousseff did a great segment on the show Monday night. His accent is a little thick, otherwise he had the delivery and facial expressions down. Amy Poehler would be great, but doubt she would do it.

(41,818 posts)take this job? He is not a comedian, and He has just been suspended from his job for 6 months.

(16,372 posts)I'd rather see him x4/week than just one.

(50,528 posts)This is Ana Kasparian - Cenk's co-host and producer of The Young Turks.
She's smart, funny, more liberal than you are, and very pleasant to look at.
There's your replacement.
