Hillary Clinton talks to be hosted by bank often investigated for wrongdoing
Hillary Clinton, the presumed frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination, will give a pair of speeches on Wednesday in Canada hosted by a major bank that has been the subject of several investigations into wrongdoing over the past dozen years.
Ms Clinton and the bank refused to say if she's being paid for the speeches. But the appearances are all but certain to fuel complaints that she's too close to the corporate elites, especially coming a day after President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech focusing on the plight of the middle class and signs that several top Republicans also plan to make economic populism a centrepiece of their campaigns.
Ms Clinton has given dozens of speeches since leaving office as secretary of state, many for free and many drawing paychecks of as much as US$200,000 to US$300,000. The Wednesday addresses could stand out, as they'll be hosted by a foreign bank with a record of investigations by US officials.

In 2003, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce settled a case with the Securities and Exchange Commission for $US80 million for allegedly helping the Enron energy company mislead investors through a series of transactions over a period of several years, according to the SEC. At least two executives agreed to settle charges of aiding and abetting the fraud, paying a total of $US600,000.
In 2005, CIBC settled another case with SEC for $US125 million after it was accused of financing late trading to increase their customers' trading profits at the expense of long-term mutual fund shareholders, according to the SEC.

(45,042 posts)that this would be used against her over and over. I think she's made her decision, she's not gonna run. There is no fucking way that she can get a lot of democrats to vote for her after doing these things. Liberals are smart and they aren't going to fall for speeches promising to help people when her actions are running in the opposite direction.
The leaked speech from this is gonna do away with any presidential aspirations. She has to know that, she is one smart lady.

in any admin, and course the would be smart.
Hillary if she wants to be elected would have give these positions
to experience democrats she trust, and they are successful,
would you give job to a failed person.
Hillary has to take the world has she finds it, like Obama, he
has done well, because his heart is in the right place.

they control huge sum of all the wealth in this country.
To become a president Hillary has to be a good politician,
Obama had to do the same thing. Warren has issues, she
is not a rounded politican. That is why she would be
better in as Majority leader.

(3,412 posts)If someone wants to become President they need the talent
of a good politician, and Hillary already have worked for
the democratic party for over 30 years. She has proved
she shares progress views on the issues.
Warren specializes in just certain areas, which is good!
She will be helpful to Hillary!

Will Hillary Clinton ignore the elephant in the room in Canada?
By Alex Seitz-Wald
And as with many things in the Clintons vast network of friends spanning business and politics, she has a personal connection to the issue.
Gordon Giffin, a longtime Clinton donor who served as ambassador to Canada under Bill Clinton, is on the board of directors of the CIBC, the bank sponsoring Clintons appearance, and has lobbied for the company hoping to build the Keystone pipeline.
Giffin, who as a Hillraiser bundler for Clintons 2008 presidential campaign and has donated $1,000 to the pro-Clinton super PAC Ready for Hillary, is a lawyer specializing in international energy issues. His firm was a registered lobbyist for Transcanada for several years, and Giffin personally lobbied for the company trying to build Keystone pipeline in 2007 and 2008, according to Senate ethics records. Transcanada did not fully takeover the Keystone pipeline until 2009.
Giffin is also on the board of Canadian Natural Resources, an energy company pushing for Keystone to be built. Also on that board with him is his former counterpart, Frank McKenna, a former Canadian ambassador to the U.S. who has moderated discussions with Clinton on previous visits to Canada.
While conservatives are likely to make hay of the connections, liberal environmentalists who oppose Keystone have also raised concern.

(1,596 posts)Gordon D. Giffin, named to the job by President Bill Clinton, received more than $990,000 (Canadian) last year in cash, stock and other compensation for his work on four Canadian corporate boards.
Giffin is a partner at McKenna Long & Aldridge, working out of the firms offices in Atlanta and Washington, DC. He served as ambassador to Canada from 1997 to 2001. Earlier in his career, he was legislative director and chief counsel to Sen. Sam Nunn.
As the State Department job helped boost both his connections and his income, he has shared the wealth. Giffin has donated money to the William J. Clinton Foundation and was a fundraiser for Hillary Rodham Clintons presidential campaign.
Giffin isnt currently registered as a lobbyist, although he was until 2008, when his clients included TransCanada Pipelines.

(3,412 posts)Hillary the Fighter
Hillary is a woman who knows how play the game of
of power and win on the American's peoples behalf.
She must make some kind of political moves toward the
banks if she wants to be elected. My senator Durbin said
that is country is run my the banks. When Hillary get power
she will use it on behalf us. We need united front against
the Koch, and the right ring corporation networks.
Hillary should run on Obama record, Gore, lost because he did
not.
Howard Dean, should become Hillary campaign manager or Head of the DNC,
Senator Brown from Ohio should become Hillary VP
Obama needs get out and campaign for Hillary, Warren should become majority leader,
I think she would be great crafting laws.
Remember Barbara Olsen said Hillary was so liberal she was commie, some
democrats need to back review Hillary record she is team player in doing
what is right for America.
