There is a story, apparently more truthy than true, that Apple's logo is a nod to Alan Turing who killed himself using a cyanide laced apple after being chemically castrated by the government after being convicted of indecency. It is too bad that story isn't true but the fact that one of the most successful and famous computer companies on earth is headed by an openly gay man is a fitting tribute.
The Imitation game is a powerful movie about an amazing man and an ungrateful society for which he had performed three amazing feats. First, he invented the precursor of the computer. Second, he broke the enigma. Third, he kept the fact it was broken secret and devised a formula to determine which attacks to stop and which not to so as to keep the fact secret.
It is easy, some 60 years later, to rail against the backwards injustice of it all but as recently as 2007 we were still summarily discharging Arabic translators for being gay. As late as June 2003 in 14 states gays could be arrested for sodomy. Just two years ago the AG of Virginia was arguing in appellate court that his state's sodomy law should still be able to be applied. Yet on the same day I saw the film the Supreme Court decided to take the case that will likely end marriage inequality in this country. And yes, Apple is headed by an openly gay man.

human rights: a zero-sum game.
The day after Apple announced that it had doubled its profits last quarter on the strength of iPhone 4s sales, the New York Times has published a bombshell of a report on the conditions inside the Chinese factories that produce all the gadgets Apple fanatics crave, and its not pretty. In short, your iPhones, iPads, iPods, etc., are essentially being produced in slave labor camps.

(53,944 posts)A Russian monument to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has been taken down, after Apple CEO Tim Cooks announcement last week that he is gay.
The monument, which is in the shape of an oversize iPhone, was located on a university campus in St. Petersburg, one of the more liberal cities in Russia, until its removal Friday.
It was put there in 2013 under the initiative of Maxim Dolgopolov, head of the holding company ZEFS, known in English as the Western European Financial Union, which cited Cooks revelations about his sexuality in a Bloomberg Businessweek article last Thursday as the reason the company decided to remove the statue.
Russian legislation prohibits propaganda of homosexuality and other sexual perversions among minors, ZEFS wrote in a statement published on the Web site of Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy. After Apple CEO Tim Cook publicly called for sodomy, the monument was dismantled pursuant to Russian federal law on the protection of children from information that promotes the denial of traditional family values.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a federal law in 2013 that bans the propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors," only a few months after the iPhone monument was installed. Putin has since argued that the law is not discriminatory and is intended only to keep children safe.
