"they got subsidized by some bigger publication. Some mainstream successful thing."

Robert Crumb confirms my suspicion that Charlie Hebdo was subsidized (as its low circulation wouldn't have supported its staff):

They had offices and staff – they seemed to have reasonable funding…

Yeah, I just read this recently that they were actually being subsidized, especially after that 2011 bombing, they got subsidized by some bigger publication. Some mainstream successful thing. It was like an old institution on the radical end of things, you know. Yeah, it doesn’t exist in the US, there’s nothing like that. It just went on for so long, you know. And it’s gonna still go on, they’re going to keep it going

2. Hebdo and its cartoon publication was not as popular as some make them out?

3. They weren't that popular.

Not sure that means "not self-sustaining." Lots of publications are small but self-sustaining.

And it's not like this report is really a report. It's hearsay in an interview and the interviewee is recalling something he read, without attribution or confirmation or even a claim of expert knowlege.

The guy may be remembering one of the recent reports like this-- http://www.mediaite.com/online/charlie-hebdo-may-receive-government-funding/

While the URL says "government funding" it also mentions private funding. No mention of it before the recent attack. Then again, the place was firebombed before, and possibly given funds to help rebuild.
