The network’s upcoming show ‘My Husband’s Not Gay’ will tell the stories of four married Utah men who deny their same-sex attraction.

Cable network TLC is best known for bringing us programming like Hoarding: Buried Alive and The Duggers—shows that reveal the extreme sides of Americans’ private lives. Now the network is upping the controversy ante by airing My Husband’s Not Gay, a special that will share the stories of four Mormon guys living in Salt Lake City who are attracted to men but don’t identify as gay. As the program’s title suggests, they’re married to women.

The show’s premise is that the guys are deliberately choosing to ignore their same-sex attraction because it conflicts with their spiritual values. It’s set to debut on the network Sunday, Jan. 10, and it’s drawing the ire of LGBT advocates. A Change.org petition started this week asking TLC not to air the program has garnered more than 92,000 signatures.

“As a gay Christian man who’s seen firsthand how this message can harm people, I am calling on TLC to cancel My Husband’s Not Gay and to stop telling America that LGBT people should lie to themselves and to their faith communities about who they are and who they love,” wrote the petition’s author, Josh Sanders.

My Husband’s Not Gay airs as the nation is grappling with the death of transgender Ohio teenager Leelah Alcorn. According to Alcorn, who committed suicide on Dec. 28, her religious parents belittled her, forced her to attend conversion therapy, and told her that her identification as female was just a phase.

by broadcasting a show that implies men who are born gay are inferior so when they watch the show, it affirms their low self-respect and self-loathing.
