Satellite Picture Shows Snow-covered U.S. Deep Freeze

NOAA's GOES-East satellite provided a look at the frigid eastern two-thirds of the U.S. on Jan. 7, 2015, that shows a blanket of northern snow, lake-effect snow from the Great Lakes and clouds behind the Arctic cold front.

A visible picture captured at 11 a.m. EST showed the effects of the latest Arctic outbreak. The cold front that brought the Arctic air moved as far south as Florida, and stretched back over the Gulf of Mexico and just west of Texas. The image shows clouds behind the frontal boundary stretching from the Carolinas west over the Heartland. Farther north, a wide band of fallen snow covers the ground from New England west to Montana, with rivers appearing like veins. The GOES-East satellite image also shows wind-whipped lake-effect snows off the Great Lakes, blowing to the southeast. Meanwhile, Florida, the nation's warm spot appeared almost cloud-free.

Yikes. It seems the ethanol in the gas would help prevent that, but not sure what is in your petro adirondacker Jan 2015 #5

it has finally moved on east and into your world. My gas gelled one day, of course I had to go somewhere that day! Directly following we got a foot of snow in 24 hrs. - not nearly enough!

Hope it doesn't stick around there too long. We actually need a few weeks of sustained subzero temps here to kill off the bark beetle infestation our forests are dying from. Seems the only remedy on the scale needed is for super cold temps to kill the larvae... takes a while.

Have a happy new year! Stay warm!

we had. I put HEAT in the gas tank and let it sit a bit and was able to start the car. This year I filled up on Sunday and put a bottle of HEAT in and have had no problems starting the car during this cold snap. YMMV.

HEET too but didn't the day before when I filled the tank with high octane. Doesn't happen often, last time was about ten years ago. Last year it got to -50F one night and my windshield wash and radiator overflow both froze and leaked out of a seal somewhere. When I had it all looked at after thawing, all was okay, guess it was just the expansion and the seals just let the stuff out during that temp event.

I agree, I should have put HEET in the day before. I ended up having to go hike for a mile to get some then hike back, then get a friend to come give me a jump since my battery was tired from trying to start a very pasty and cold engine after just a few tries.

It is winter, and a mild one for these parts so far. We should have much more snow and it should be colder.

one of the few downsides to driving a Mini Cooper S. The first time it happened last year I blamed the not starting on the battery. The car was 9 years old and it was the original battery. But when the AAA guy came to jump me he pointed out that the courtesy lights were working and so the battery was fine. He's the one who suggested it was the gas. Luckily my husband had a bottle of it down the basement, so we poured it in and voila, it worked. I finally got around to replacing the battery a month or so ago. It was over 10 years old and the indicator on it showed it was still good, but I figured I was pushing my luck if this winter had as many really cold days, at least for Maryland, as we'd had last year.

Here's hoping you have little or no more need to use HEET this winter.

out there. Here it's 10% and haven't had a gas issue in ages. (the gas antifreeze they sold in the 70/80's was ethanol based I believe).

Great news as of yesterday and will contact ya soon. Happy New Year to you as well.

but the place where I filled up, now that I think about it, hasn't had a tank test in a long time and I wonder if there may have been some water in it. Might be in my tank too after a long trip and using gas from other regions recently, I was using high octane all the way though. Just never know...

The HEET stuff as most additives for gas off that type use methyl alcohol, it's still alcohol.

Looking forward to hearing from you...
