The image above is a still from the chinese movie "The Empress of China". Wu Zetian was a chinese empress during the Tang-dynasty in the 7th century. The dress you see is historically correct: Showing cleavage was a sign of status in society.
Chinese censors chose to crop out cleavage in many scenes as to not confuse the precious minds of the viewers. The viewers voiced their discontent on the Internet... and were promptly censored as well.
"In the past, the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SGAPPRFT) agency has issued a ban on salacious content including drug use and murder, time travel (deemed unscientific), and stories that propagate a passive or negative outlook on life, worldview and value system. "
China is living a disconnect right now: Young chinese like the open, western life-style, while older chinese see it as corrupting the morals.
Sexologists get mobbed and attacked with feces for corrupting the spirits of impressionable young Chinese by mentioning that there exists more than man+woman... Even though sex-shops can be found everywhere, gay-bars are heavily frequented, prostitution is alive and well and the very sexuality that is censored on TV and in the internet is on open display in suggestive print-ads.
What else?
* Masturbation is unhealthy.
* Mentioning homosexuality turns people gay.
* Sex-ed is virtually non-existent in China. So, where do babies come from? "We found you under a tree."
The push-back is led by a conservative grassroots-organization that goes far beyond the official censorship of sexual content, but whose mobbing is condoned by silence.
It's a wider battle against "western decadence" and censorship is obviously the right tool to protect people from thoughts and opinions they are not supposed to have.

(29,257 posts)Ummm, it's actually pretty dumb.
Take my word for it. As a person that has forgotten more about Japanese culture than anyone reading this is ever likely to know in their lives, I have seen the embarrassing result of ignorant speculation and armchair psychology here. It ain't pretty and it ain't that close to the mark probably.
But don't let me ruin anyone's entertainment. Go for it!

(33,982 posts)I would pay to listen to an actual bonobo lecture about sex.
Science, translate their language and make this happen.

(29,257 posts)I'd like to hear that lecture too. But in all honesty, G-G rubbing isn't rocket science.

(22,791 posts)...isn't the real reason for banning the topic. More likely time travel can be used to visit times in the past that show up the hypocrisy and totalitarianism of the present government.

(13,133 posts)What the law says, what establishment would allow to go on and what actually does go on are three different things. The idea to control all forms of expression (including sex) and thus control the population with forms of intimation is the norm that governments want to portray. A paradigm shift historically comes more rapidly today to these more the authoritarian regimes that persist in trying to change a natural order of things. Case in point in recent US history, the distilled alcohol prohibition was a total failure that spiked up total crime in many areas.
If government doesn't try to work with it population in obtaining some of it's desires it will be cast aside, marginalized and sometimes even up-ended. This even more true today as outside influence has more leverage on populations that are discontent with the government they currently have. It's really only common sense and with the world population more socially tied together in closer rings than ever before it gets even more inevitable. They say what you do to my brother you also do to me and this is becoming ever so much more true. Woo to those forces that cannot understand how it works
