WASHINGTON -- Former "ER" star Noah Wyle and more than 100 members of the group ADAPT have been arrested during a Capitol Hill protest to urge Congress not to cut Medicaid.
The protesters, many in wheelchairs, were handcuffed in the rotunda of the Cannon House Office Building.
Wyle and members of ADAPT say any cuts in Medicaid spending would force people with disabilities and the elderly out of their homes and into nursing homes to get the services they need.

(108 posts)Gorgeous and conscientious! At least there are still some good guys in the world, even though people like Wyle and Clooney could just as easily forget about us "little people."
Oh, and this is my first post here. Thought I'd keep it light. Hi all at DU!

(78,249 posts)the initials originally stood for Americans Disabled for Accessible Public Transit. ADAPT used to show up wherever the American Public Transit Association (APTA) was having its convention, and raise havoc. (The first ADAPT action involved chair users chaining themselevs to inaccessible buses at the main transfer point in downtown Denver at the height of afternoon rush hour.)
Thanks to ADAPT and the ADA, nearly all buses are now accessible, so the group changed its focus to FREE OUR PEOPLE!, who represent fully one-quarter of the country's nursing home population.

Believe me, ADAPT activists (disclaimer: I was at last fall's action, though I didn't get arrested) don't want any special treatment from the gendarmerie, even if they use wheelchairs. To me the sad thing is that the M$M is only now sitting up and taking notice, all because a hunky actor who had a hit series a few years ago is on board.

It's just horrible what this country is doing to people who have the least.

(78,249 posts)that is, directing what resources it does have to large, state-run institutions, or smaller, privately-run ones, rather than placements in the community, which are not only cost-effective but are a civil right under the Supreme Counrt's 1999 decision in Olmstead v. L.C.
