"Colbert Super PAC would pay up to $400,000 directly to the state and counties to defray the cost of the election. In return, the primarys official name would be The Colbert Super PAC South Carolina Republican Primary'...(and a)...non-binding referendum would appear on the ballot:...
( ) Corporations are people.
( ) Only people are people."
...(The) South Carolina Supreme Court...ruled against the counties, finding that they should still pay for some of the primary..."The S.C. Republican Party no longer needed my $400,000, but...they graciously offered to still want it...I asked in return that they petition the court to get the referendum back on the ballot. They said no...Desperate, I reached out to the S.C. Democrats, who agreed to file a request to reinstate the referendum..."

This is a perfect example of why the Rethugs fail to stay in power: Do they see the PR damage that even talking to Colbert can do? Do they see the inherently unethical implications of a privately-financed primary? No -- all they can see is $500,000 being waved at them!

(359 posts)Australia can no longer get internet access to either Colbert or Stewart unless we have cable.
Please continue to whet my appetite with snippets of their goings-on.

(6,908 posts)I think the $500,000 was to sponsor the primary, not the convention as stated. The convention is in Florida (and probably still for sale)

(7,569 posts)I didn't have the nerve to ask my sister-in-law last night in S.C. if she knew about this Colbert effort! Prolly not. Doesn't watch him or Stewart. She's a very defensive Republican. We cannot discuss politics, at all. I don't even know who she supports, but it ain't Obama. "Any one of the Republicans running would be better than what we have" according to her. I love her, she's got a great sense of humor but is blind in ways.

(2 posts)He's funny and interesting, but I'm not sure about his involvement in important decisions, but then I guess if corporations can do this stuff why not Colbert.
