33. Did deBlasio give them that union?
No he did not. The police banded together and organized it.
I have no idea how in the world the DEMOCRATICunderground is now a place where unions get shit on and police officers are painted with the widest brush of corruption that is usually reserved for Wall Street. DeBlasio is a screw up. His statement after the cops in the Garner killing weren't indicted is so mealy mouthed and parsed as to be disgusting. He could have condemned the actions of the officers and praised the NYPD as a whole and he failed to even try to be anything but condemning. |

The office of Mayor is a reflection of the will of the electorate. What the police (employees) did in their demonstration was show their contempt for the will of the people, the democratically elected civil authority.
It's all right wing bullshit anyway. The police know full well the Mayor's words didn't cause a fucking problem. They are just being led around by the nose by the massively powerful right wing forces that exist in this nation. Someday these same police will be very sorry for contributing to this bullshit. I hope they remember back to what the nation used to be like before the Fascists took over. |

Many poor and honest and brave persons did this. They who labored, most coming here to build America, some forcibly brought here… many to their own demise… all for fair labor standards "gave" them that union. It's besides the point of their turning their backs on this mayor and demanding he step down.
Civil servants are not meant to be anything else, certainly what you have indicated in this instance. Unions are not the issue here… It's the blatant disregard for how under law, THE law is to serve, not be act above the rule of order and disregard for the law. DeBlasio didn't screw up. I read the statement and fail to recognize anything you wrote in that statement. It called for recognition and resolution of a serious problem. 48. The statement is below
http://www1.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/540-14/statement-mayor-bill-de-blasio#/0
What part of it is incorrect? The Garner case isn't about loose cigarettes. The statement doesn't praise the NYPD because it's about police reform, which is long overdue, better police-community relations, also long overdue, and peaceful protest in light of the Grand Jury decision. In part, it is designed to show empathy for the family and curb the urge for violence bubbling in some people. Not exactly a time to praise a police force that "trained" two police officers to kill an unarmed innocent man in the Pink Houses and another guy to use a discredited technique in restraining a suspect who may have committed a misdemeanor. I take offense at your personal attack on the Mayor, a Progressive Democrat, one of us and one of the most pro-Union people in this town. It smacks of the kind of crass opportunism embodied by Patrick Lynch and his conservative, thin blue line brigade. It is hard to support a union brother when he's threatening you over the right to kill suspects of color. That's why many of us have mixed emotions about the police and their role in the community. |

Officers who turned their backs to the Mayor are ANGRY with him because they want to kill black people with impunity and the Mayor isn’t playing along.

and dynamics here.
As in Ferguson, and other locations, what seems to piss off police is their being confronted with that unbalanced element of police mistreatment of people from minorities. We expect all our public servants to act like adults. Today, a large element of the NYPD didn't act like adults. By contrast he mayor of NYC has always acted as a responsible and respectful adult with regard to these issues. His public remarks at the funeral today bear that out as well. Police, not so much. Then you have Giuliani flame-baiting over race, and lying about what Obama has been saying since Ferguson, with free air time all Giuliani wants on Faux Noose, cheered on by the racist regulars which is all the Fear News station has to sell their viewers. |

They feel they are above all civilians, those in authority and those they supposedly serve. Anne Arthur · Top Commenter · Portland, Oregon I agree. They want respect, but too many act like immature children. This is not the way to instill public trust or respect into their judgments or behaviors. If they want respect, the good officers are going to have to 'out' the problematic officers. And the union needs to stop protecting the officers that hurt the organization as a whole. This is really heartening! For sanity's sake. The NYPD wanted the Protestors to stop out of respect for Officers Ramos and Liu But, they cannot bring themselves to show the same respect they ask of others. Hypocrite thy name is NYPD. |
