The poll, performed by national polling agency Magellan Strategies on behalf of the Colorado Women's Alliance, surveyed unaffiliated women on attitudes about candidates, campaign strategies, and issues regarding abortion and birth control. More than half of the women polled identified themselves as pro-choice. Still, most of them (79 percent) would consider supporting a pro-life candidate. How is that possible? Because, according to the survey, most women, even unaffiliated swing voters, prioritize many issues when voting.
The same poll found that most women do not fear the government taking birth control away from them, but are concerned that politicians are using the issue to try and scare them into voting a certain way. Perhaps someone should mention this to Udall, whose most recent campaign commercial employs such tactics. The commercial accuses Gardner of conducting a "crusade" against birth control. Never mind that Gardner supports making birth-control pills available over-the-counter. Never mind that birth control has been universally legal since the 1972 Eisenstadt vs. Baird Supreme Court decision and Congress has neither the power nor the desire to ban it. Similarly, Congress can do virtually nothing about abortion since the high court has determined its legality.
