What's with all the GLOOM and DOOM threads?

I don't want to wade through all that negativity, but I have to in order to hide them.

I don't want to hear about Dems just lining up to throw themselves into the bottomless pit of minority status come Tuesday.

I just don't want to hear that crap.

And frankly, some of them border on gleefulness.

22. I marinated in fresh finely chopped mint...

a couple cloves of garlic cut coarse, the juice of one lemon, and some extra virgin olive oil. Let it soak in that for a few hours, then on the grill 7 minutes rib side up, 7 down. I then wrapped it up in foil for 10 minutes. Came out a nice med. rare. It was my first time doing it, and I impressed myself. If it weren't so expensive, I would do it once a week.

52. I'm wondering what they'll do

On Wednesday if we wake up and the Senate is Democratic.

Especially with the election fraud uncovered in KY and Landrieu basically telling black people she will represent them if they get out and vote for her. I could be wrong - but I don't think those to are going to lose. And the recent fear tactic in Iowa - that could bring out some steely spined liberals and progressives who just want to punish Ernst for being an asshole.

...they have defeated the Democrats by depressing turnout with their "impending doom" prognosis. They are horrible for what they are doing, then turn around wonder why Democrats don't fight. Why should they when the liberals are telling them that they've already lost?!!?!?

6. We may lose the Senate but we will reclaim some governorships

There will be good news on Tuesday night regardless of what happens in the Senate. Apart from Brown's win in CA, there was almost no good news on election night in 2010. Plus, 2016 is approaching and it is nothing but blue skies for us.

17. It happens every Halloween, ma'am.

I took in a nuclear apocalypse marathon on Friday.

On the Beach -- Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins.

Dr. Strangelove -- Mein Furher! I can walk!

Fail-Safe -- the live performed CBS remake of the 1962 film, damned good. (Richard Dreyfus, George Clooney, Harvey Keitel as Blackie, and a bunch of other good character actors, introduced by Walter Conkrite.) Appropriately broadcast in black and white.

The Day After -- another TV production. Jason Robards does okay in a rather soapy apocalypse.

Miracle Mile -- does anybody know where I can find a helicopter pilot? Pure camp with a Tangerine Dream soundtrack. The perfect end of a night of global death and mayhem.

Tonight I think I am going to watch Robert Wise's 1962 direction of The Haunting, one of the most cringe-worthy film ever made. "My god! Who was holding my hand?" A great cast, and it has Miss Moneypenny, too.

Have a spooky weekend, my friend.

36. PTSD from 2010...

I'm glad my state is staying blue, but I'm sorry for all the dumbf***ery elsewhere seems to perpetuate itself, against all good sense. Elections always make me wonder how so many people can fall for such idiotic campaigns and vote for such misanthropic dimwits. But then we move on, and things (such as they are) remain largely the same.

51. I think you may be onto something with the PTSD--esp in WI...

I have been canvassing several times now--Dem, Mary Burke against Scott Walker. There is a real feel of hopelessness out there (sometimes I feel it myself--although now quite PTSD). But the trauma of 2010 with Russ Fiengold gone to a Teabagger Ron Johnson coupled with voting in all Republicans for our Senate and Assembly and GOV (our Supreme Court is now owned by #KOCH)--is very traumatizing. I had hopes until mid week when the last poll put Walker ahead by 7pts). They had been tied all summer. I still asked people to vote as I canvassed and I hope my 'down and out-ness' did not show

44. TALKING TO OURSELVES

Yes, I hate the gloom and doom talk as well. I write this on the Saturday before Election Day and, frankly, the election is up in the air. A dozen (or a thousand) indicators but not altogether clear nor altogether relevant. The spread of cable TV and the internet has made many of the old reliable indicators obsolete.

One big mistake that I learned from bitter experience is partisans talking too much among themselves, each of them blowing sunshine up the other's bloomers. They have unrealistic (and usually over-optimistic) expectations that crash and burn in the reality of the ballot box numbers.

Among the various details I consider significant: (1) Too many (maybe most) Democratic candidates are trying to avoid any connection to Obama, and in some instances actually attacking him. Compare this with Republicans uniformly attacking him in the strongest possible terms. If I was presented with two candidates who both oppose Obama then wouldn't I opt for the one who was so much more enthusiastic about hating him?
(2) Democrats discussing the theoretical effect of the wisdom of avoiding a Republican majority in Congress, compared with Republicans declaring that voting Democratic will bring on the wrath of God.
(3) Complete obsfucation of the true present condition of the economy -- the Republicans lie about it and the Democrats cannot seem to explain it convincingly (and without being boring).
(4) Some potential voters have been so turned off by the nasty and negative campaigning that they have decided not to vote -- which, of course, plays into the hands of the people who have been the most nasty and negative.

I am going to vote on Tuesday. I will stand in the cold for maybe an hour. Other people aren't willing to do that - but they'll stand outside the Walmart all night on Thanksgiving to be the first to grab bargains on Black Friday.

It pisses me off, but far worse, it degrades the tone and quality of DU. What exactly is their point? I don't want the individuals huffing and puffing about what "realists" they are, I want US to consider the implications of this collective doom and gloom all is lost oh woe is us message.
