21. She continued teaching:
Claire McConnell received her undergraduate education at Smith College in Massachusetts, from which she graduated with a B.A. in Studio Art in 1997. In her third year of college, she enrolled in a study abroad program in China. After earning her Bachelor’s degree, she relocated to England for a year, and then moved to California. While continuing her studies through the San Francisco Waldorf Teacher Training program, Ms. McConnell worked as an assistant preschool teacher at A Child’s Nest in the town of El Cerrito. Upon receipt of her Waldorf Teaching Certificate in July of 2001, Ms. McConnell accepted a position as a teacher with the Hawthorne Valley School in Harlemville, New York.
Claire McConnell later decided to pursue further studies in art, which led her to travel to England. There, she attended the Artemis School of Speech and Drama in East Grinstead, taking courses in storytelling, poetry, acting, and other arts. In July of 2007, she received a Goetheanum diploma in Creative Speech. Ms. McConnell subsequently returned to the U.S. and settled in Philadelphia, where she started teaching again. While offering classes in speech and drama to adult students, she also began writing fiction. In 2009, she was asked to assist in the Snowdrop Nursery at the Waldorf School of Philadelphia. http://msclairemcconnell.wordpress.com/about/ |

10. This is disgraceful. And I assume that this is a long held idea of discipline in the McConnell
family. I know they will not fire her but that does not change the fact that she should have been fired.

11. Huh, it's a Waldorf School
Steiner was arguably a creepy, derivative new age racist but I doubt this is normal at Waldorf schools.
I'm guessing the woman learned it at home, as others are speculating. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() They paid EXTRA for this. Just fyi: In Boston in the 60's a new teacher was introduced to the switches in vinegar. (Kozol - read his books if you really want to learn about education. Things still much same, but dressed up much nicer now.). They were kept in the basement, used for the black kids, because "their skins are tougher, you know". Where did she learn it? As a teacher she stands on the shoulders of giants, or at least a third of the ones I knew. And the rest covered for those. Like cops. |

17. Waldorf schools are also rabidly anti-technology, and don't want kids watching tv or using computers
AFAIU.

18. I grew up in the '60s....
...and back then what would now be considered extreme punishment was accepted, but I never saw anything like this. I always believed such drastic measures is an indication that the teacher simply lacks the intellectual tools to handle their students.
Daddy should get her a job at one of his lobbyist's coal mines. Certainly not in a position where she has people under her control, but perhaps a low level book keeping job where she doesn't have to interact with people who challenge her limited social skills. |

FYI, cause you're new. Interesting story. He has 3 daughters by his first wife (of 25 years), but they keep a very low profile. Their names are not even listed in his bio.
Sherrill Redmon (1968–1993, divorced) Elaine Chao (1993–present) McConnell is a member of the Southern Baptist Convention. His first wife was Sherrill Redmon,] from whom he was later divorced; they have three daughters.
