Pack of pit bulls mauls seniors in Modesto home

An elderly man and woman were mauled and left in critical condition by a pack of pit bulls Tuesday evening in Modesto, officials said.

Around 4:45 p.m. numerous 911 calls came into the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reporting an elderly man was being mauled by four dogs in a yard on the 800 block of Glenn Avenue within blocks of elementary and middle schools.

Deputies found three dogs attacking the man in his backyard and the fourth dog circling the unconscious victim, Sheriff Adam Christianson said.

Deputies shot and killed two of the dogs and the other two fled to a neighboring backyard. The victim was rushed to a waiting ambulance and officers searched the house, where they found an elderly woman, who had also been attacked by the dogs and was suffering from critical injuries, Christianson said.

"it is unusual for 4 dogs to attack a person." No, packs of dogs are more aggressive than single dogs. single dogs can be scared away - my border collie, years ago, was attacked by a german sheppard on the street who bit her and would not let go when she got between me and the sheppard. I didn't know what to do so I yelled "bad dog" - at that point the dog let go and ran away. Believe it or not it was a seeing eye dog on the loose. Why he went after me I have no idea.

Then there was a time when I was surrounded by 5 beagles and had to keep them at bay by swinging my purse at them. I had to find a door way that was open so I could get on the other side. Yes, 5 tiny vicious beagles. After I got in the door, they went away to challenge someone else. It was surreal, I had a beagle of my own at that time. it was in a city, what are the odds so many beagles would form a pack. In a city, with few parks or even grass and a cold winter (dogs can't survive like cats when the weather is bad and they were not ferral.)
