Texas Voter ID Law Blocked by Federal Judge

A federal judge on Thursday blocked Texas from enforcing voter ID requirements just weeks ahead of the November elections, knocking down a law that the U.S. Justice Department condemned in court as the state's latest means of suppressing minority turnout.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos of Corpus Christi is a defeat for Republican-backed photo ID measures that have swept across the U.S. in recent years and mostly been upheld in court. However, the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday night blocked Wisconsin from implementing a law requiring voters to present photo IDs.

Gonzales Ramos, an appointee of President Barack Obama, never signaled during a two-week trial in September that she intended to rule on the Texas law — rebuked as the toughest of its kind in the U.S. — before Election Day. But the timing could spare an estimated 13.6 million registered Texas voters from needing one of seven kinds of photos identification to cast a ballot.

The Justice Department says more than 600,000 of those voters, mostly blacks and Hispanics, currently lack any eligible ID to vote.

Do you know if the appeal mentioned in the article can be ruled on before the election? I would think not, but in Texas one never knows for sure how swiftly the wheels may turn for the Republicans.

Enjoy your good news tonight! It's a huge victory, which I'm sure you know as you can hear the sounds of Republican heads exploding across the state.

I hope it stands and the impoverish in Texas get a chance to have their voices heard like the same as those who can afford the process to get an ID.

I read the 147 page opinion last night. The opinion contemplates a separate injunction to be issued blocking the law for this election. There is a good argument that the injunction should be allowed to block the law for this election. Here is a good article from Prof. Leavitt http://electionlawblog.org/?p=66613 The 5th Cir. will probably block the law and then we will get to see if John Roberts lied when he ruled that we did need Section 5 because the remaining provisions of the voting rights act provided an adequate remedy.

If this law goes into effect, over 600,000 registered Texas voters will not be allowed to vote

I'm thinking all the hundreds of county clerks in Texas, no matter their party, are grinding their teeth thinking of all the retraining beginning next week for all the election workers!!! The last time I went for retraining, we spent most of the hour on all the ID's which are valid or non-valid. so we're back to square one on the ID's. It's too late for an appeal ruling, I think. Too close to early voting.

I was talking to my county's election administrator about this on Monday when I was dropping off voter registration applications prior to the deadline. We can use the old rules very easily

The DOJ is the reason why we won this case. The DOJ did an amazing job in this lawsuit and provided the key expert witnesses who made the difference

Pennsylvania and Texas because he "thought" he could vote in both states because he owned property in both states. He also ran for an office in Fort Bend county and was a friend of True the Vote lady. I wonder if she counted him in her fraud numbers. Funny how the GOP continues to cry voter fraud and the only cases I have seen are by Republicans, guess this is why they are so sure there is voter fraud.
