"Voter registration jumped 30 percent in Ferguson, Missouri between August 9 the day unarmed teenager Michael Brown was fatally shot by Officer Darren Warren and September 30. As protests and clashes with police continue, the towns residents want to see more race representation in their local government in the near future.
Approximately 3,300 citizens in the town of 21,000 registered to vote after Browns death, totaling two-thirds of new voters in St. Louis County. Currently, 5 of 6 Ferguson council members are white, but roughly 70 percent of the citys population is black. And Fergusons mayor is white Republican James Knowles."

This has always been my number one gripe about how we tackle voter suppression
Once republicans get in control they immediately start erecting roadblocks, and we file lawsuits and kvetch about how unfair it all is.
We need to believe that they will prevail and immediately set out to comply with their idiotic rules. It does us no good to waste money on lawsuits that may or may not "fix" things. That money would be better spent in getting IDs for our voters, and then getting them to the polls.
If we actually win and can enact new laws, we can change things, but until then, we have to help our voters get to vote

(53,661 posts)it can unseat those higher in the political scene. There is no time like the present, a month away. Americans can't wait until 2016 for change, as that's a national election. The gains are made at the local level. not covered well on MSM or DU. Thank for this good news.
