Family flying Mexican flag brings out the racists in full force

Woman Irate That Ontario Family Is Flying Mexican Flag In Their Front Yard
September 25, 2014 5:37 PM

[link:http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/video?autoStart=true&topVideoCatNo=default&clipId=10625738|

ONTARIO (CBSLA.com) — A controversy involving the Mexican flag has one family in Ontario wondering why one woman made it her business, while the people she did business with, in turn, asked her to leave.
Tressy Capps, a local political activist in the Inland Empire, was irked by seeing the Mexican flag flying in a front yard and confronted the homeowner on a video she shot on a smartphone and posted to YouTube.
“Hi. Is that a Mexican flag in your front yard?” Capps is heard asking the homeowner, who is behind a window.
“You know we live in America right? This is the United States. So, why are you flying a Mexican flag in your front yard?” she is heard asking the woman.
KCAL9’s Tom Wait spoke to Capps and the homeowner she confronted. The woman behind the window doesn’t speak English and didn’t understand the questions Capps asked.
Capps confronts her on video a third time.
“This is America. Maybe you can move to Mexico if you want to fly your Mexican flag. Does that make sense?” Capps says.
Wait spoke to the homeowner’s husband, Sigifredo Banuelos, who didn’t understand why Capps was making their flag her concern.
“I don’t think it’s offensive because this flag doesn’t do anything,” he said.
Banuelos says he and his family never meant to offend anyone. They were just celebrating their Mexican heritage. He says the family keeps both a U.S. and Mexican flag flying.
“We decide. We have one American and one Mexican,” he said.
Capps said she was offended by the Mexican flag.
“I was offended. I was pretty upset. But I couldn’t understand her,” Capps said.
Capps says she’s received threats since the video was posted and went viral. Capps insists she’s not a racist, just a patriot.
“I don’t understand what all the hatred is about. Why everyone is labeling me these names. Racist? I don’t understand why everyone is so angry.”
Capps says the fallout from the video caused her to lose her independent contact position with a real estate company.
As for the city, they say the flag is not in violation of any city, state or federal ordinances.

TO the DU censors: These are not my comments nor meant to inflame. I was surprised to see such language on cbs story.
I am including comments since they are part of the underlying story.

No doubt many right wingers want to ethnically cleanse the US and kill minorities.

Minorities have to be extra vigilant. The Jews in Europe didn't stand a chance once Hitler came to power.

It's a huge skull and bones flag though we don't have much breeze, so it usually just looks like a mostly black hunk of material. I thought it was funny once I realized what it was.

One of my other neighbors several streets away always flies an Italian flag with the US flag on the pole in their front yard. Fine by me. I guess they're Italian and proud of their heritage.

I've seen other people flying flags of other nations in their yards or a Harley Davidson flag or some other non-national flag. Whoopdie doo. The only one that bothers me to see displayed is the Confederate flag or whatever it is that most people believe is the Confederate flag but is actually a battle flag or something like that from the Civil War.

She added this update: "They put up an American flag in compliance with the law. A peaceful and pleasant exchange resulted in a positive result. God Bless America and the American Flag."

As if flying the flag of Mexico was not "in compliance with the law."

"Pleasant exchange"?! She sounds and acts like a stupid fucking racist piece of shit.

At least she lost her job for being the asshole that she apparently is.

Now she may devote all of her time to being an insane, ignorant teabagger.

I see so many Irish flags flying at people's houses it's crazy. No one bats an eyelash. Do people not fly Irish flags in other places?

Many people in the US have always been proud of where they live AND where they come from. Here in West Michigan, it's often the Dutch who have Dutch things everywhere (though not the flag so much, but maybe because it isn't that easily identifiable - people might think it was French.)

This is seen as normal the more white you are, and threatening, or "disrespectful," the less white you are.

So yeah, no doubt what could have been done was much worse. But I'm glad Coldwell took a stand for diversity, and I'd hope that maybe this lady might rethink some of her prejudices. But that might be a long shot.

To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture.
