Security Guard Stabbed by Mob While Protecting Dog Orphanage

http://www.care2.com/causes/security-guard-stabbed-by-mob-while-protecting-dog-orphanage.html

Just weeks into his new job as a security guard for the Ukrainian animal shelter in the city of Kiev, Petro Dibrova was forced to become a human shield when a mob of angry men appeared with the intention of killing the animals and taking the compound for themselves.

“The attackers tried to enter the heart of the shelter but Petro would not let them,” Shelter founder Tamara Tarnawska explains from Petro’s hospital bedside. “Then they attacked him and inflicted several stab wounds. Staff at the shelter had to call the police and they managed to detain one of the attackers.”

The attack happened in the evening hours and was the second in a series of attempts to harm the animals at the shelter. Back in February Molotov cocktails were thrown over the shelter wall, causing extensive damage to the puppy zone, but thankfully no animals were harmed. Yet this ambush was bolder and far more hands-on.

“In the evening Petro heard the barking of dogs and some shouting in the street,” Tamara explains. ”Our shelter is located in a field, not near people’s homes, so Petro went over to see what was happening. He saw several of the dogs behaving very hectically. Petro did not see anyone so he went to get them some food, assuming the dogs were hungry. When he started to feed them, several men ran toward him shouting, ‘There are many war refugees and destruction, and you feed the homeless animals!’”

Yes, there are lots of refugees, and they should be taken care of, especially with winter coming.

But this sounds more like a group of transients who want to set up their own little compound, and they figure an established dog sanctuary is an easier target than an already-established farm with a family living there.

Just an observation from what historically happens in war zones; there's only a 20/25% chance the attackers were actually part of refugees or displaced families who had made it into the area. Most refugees or displaced families would actually be attempting to work with the official leadership in those communities so they would be accepted and could integrate in those communities. A refugee or displaced family might make an offer to help take care of the dogs and the security if they could stay in the building; of course, a dog kennel compound is not set up for human living, so there would be some serious modifications that would need to be made to the plumbing and structure if people needed to lodge there with the dogs...

There's much more a 70% chance the "attackers" are just a transient group of young assholes who wanted a larger building and surrounds that they could use as a base for whatever enterprise they wanted to set up for themselves, and saw the minimally guarded dog sanctuary as an opportunity to just take.

Of course it makes sense to someone who wasn't from that area and wasn't concerned with the local population- a community sponsored "dog orphange" that has been around for over 25 years obviously wouldn't be considered something of value to the community that had set it up and continue to make efforts to keep it going...

Refugees Are Helping Too

Two wonderful refugees, who are now living at the FRIEND shelter, help change bandages on a dog. They also help workers to cook for the animals and to clean the shelter grounds.

Bless that security guard a million times over. I wish I could do something to help him...

Craps...just tried to give and it won't accept my credit card. This is the 2nd time in the last few weeks this has happened. I think it may have something to do with paypal. I used to use a paypal account and stopped years ago because it would randomly change my current credit card to an old one and caused so many problems. I think once you have a paypal account, it's there forever and screws up the works if you try to use credit card instead of paypal.

I just got a call from fraud prevention at my Credit Union. AT 12:42 central time somebody tried to charge $97.95 to my credit card.

I had tried to donate a small amount to the aid organization linked to this OP just a short time prior to that -- just before posting above. That transaction was denied.

Thank you for the warning. And thank you for trying to help the animals in the war zone.

I trust Care 2. But it sure looks like the Harmony Fund may be open to abuse. I'm alerting Care 2 also.

You can probably tell I wasn't on the DU much over the weekend. Do you want to contact Harmony about your experience?

Dear Steve,

Thank you first for your wonderful support. I am so sorry for any issues you are facing. This is the first we have heard of this. Harmony Fund uses Paypal to process our donations because they are among the largest and most secure in the world. If there were a breach on their end it would affect millions of businesses who use their service. As we have not been notified of any breach from Paypal or from any other donors, hope the problem did occur due to anything related to your donation to us.

Could you let me know which donation form you used and what you experienced if you have not already resolved the problem? Then we can investigate it on our end and ensure there is not a breach here.

Thank you again,

Jenny

I advised them that it was through the credit card option, not paypal.

I have just heard back from them and they are again suggesting it was paypal that denied my card and are suggesting there was something wrong with my credit card, and don't seem to have read my email too closely. I will reply one more time.

I've had a credit card with my credit union for over a decade without any problems. It was my credit card company that denied the credit. They then contacted me to confirm the charge, because it was outside of my ordinary spending patterns or something to that effect. The charge that they contacted me about was not one I had heard of, was based in the midwest and the amount was odd -- nearly 4x what I'd tried to donate at around the same time that they were showing the other charge.

I still believe that their security was breeched. I'm not blaming them; I do believe they should investigate, but that is obviously their choice.
