Part 3 of "The Roosevelts" will blow you away

The reasons Teddy ran as the "Progressive" candidate was because his own party (Republicans) wouldn't allow him to be the nominee. Listen to his diatribes claiming that the monied interests have taken over both parties and that no one was on the side of the working class. The similarities to our own times are chilling.

PBS has all 7 parts of "The Roosevelts" on their website as of this evening.

2. So far, so good with parts 1 and 2 - well worth the watch and much to think about.

Such as the more things change, the more they are the same - or at least, things we see now are not really new (or something like that!)

3. All through the first two parts of the series I have recognized the similarities to our time.

Especially between the corporations then and now. Also the fact that those corporations used the same methods of control over out country. Buy themselves a political party. This is the best series I have ever seen on PBS. We need to see this today.

Edited to ask if anyone knows what they are asking for the video - how much does it cost?

4. After volunteering for Kerry in '04 I went to D.C.

I stayed with one of his committee staffers and was taken to the FDR Memorial by someone who ran a Kerry website. I suspect there was a method to their madness. After that campaign, I couldn't help tearing up seeing the FDR quotes engraved there...

5. No wonder Libertarians list him among their "worst" presidents

Tells you something.

6. He was also upset that Taft was undoing a lot of his reforms.

Taft was a waste of a president after TR.

A good accompaniment to this series is "The Bully Pulpit," by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Shows how both TR and muckraking journalism had a profound effect on the age.

9. Ha

I was thinking the same thing about it being a good accompaniment to The Bully Pulpit. I've been trying to read through it slowly.

19. I'm going to reread it.

There are just so many parallels between then and now that I think it's worth a slower, closer read.

20. I wish I could get through it once

I'm so busy it's killing me. I commute 62 miles round trip five days a week, have class prep, and am working on a dissertation. Only 13 more weeks until vacation!

Ah, then I have to start finally learning Korean.

7. Thanks for posting this

Is that all of the series or is there more to come?

I'm in the middle of reading The Bully Pulpit, which is a very long book. So that fits in well with the videos you posted a link to.

10. That's all there is in the series.

They are set to expire on 9/28/14. You're the second to mention "The Bully Pulpit." Sounds like something I need to add to my ever-increasing reading list.

13. Correct.

At least from PBS. They might offer it a few years down the road for free but unless you tape it now, you'll have to buy the series after it expires.

14. He bucked his own party

as did FDR several years later. THAT is what we need today, someone who will LEAD the party instead of the party leading the candidate.

16. Ted was a strange guy with his war-mongering. I can look

past that, they explained clearly because of his father why he was that way. He ended up fighting for the working class, something republicans now days would be unheard of doing.

It's an amazing mini series, can't wait for episode 3.

18. Mccain admired Teddy because of his war mongering

But his entire domestic agenda was so unlike the GOP of today.

Unlike GOP of today he wanted members of his family to fight.Today's GOP want war but don't want their sons or grandsons fighting. He
even encourged Elanor that FDR should enlist while he was assistant secretary of the Navy.

Teddy was real maverick not mccain. He fought the party bosses and they picked him to be VP to get him out of governor's office.
