I recommend we delete permanently one of the smilies

Ok here we are discussing child abuse and domestic violence and on the list of smilies we have this:

I think we should delete it as in my humble opinion it is in bad taste after the week of events we have had.

I know we have huge issues to contend with, but looking for a smilie for another OP, I thought this was not a good idea to have anymore. How about retiring the smilie??????

This one offends me:

It's not very sensitive to the survivors, or their descendants, of the Titanic, IMO.

...and this one:

It's not very sensitive to DUers who are recovering alcoholics, IMO.

...and this one:

It's not very sensitive to us Jazz-loving DUers, IMO.

Why do we insist on degrading the stupid, too?

Please, also, ban these religious smilies. I'm an atheist!

toilet-trained, that they should poop their pants or, even worse, poop in the streets like dogs.

I don't think DU wants to make that message.

Perhaps, we need a smilie with someone pooping in the street and the No symbol stamped over it.

I'd like a smiley where he toast is with wine instead of beer. As a wine drinker I am offended that I don't have that option. It's like saying wine drinkers don't count as people.

Can't tell you how many hours I have laid awake at night because I was so distressed by this!1!!

Child abuse should not be made light of IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.

But then there's comedy and its close cousin, irony. I'm not fond of stripping our discourse of either. (I gave you a rec in recognition of your concern and intent)

But, that place is NOT in a child abuse thread.

If I remember correctly, the poster that used it was cheerleading abuse. Had I been a juror on an alert, I would have voted for a Hide just based on the misuse of that smiley.

I saw a thread on child abuse where the poster was talking about how being beaten as a child had no bad effect on him/her. So, in essence we shouldn't be outraged over a spanking issue. Then used that smiley to mock people that talked about how horrible abuse is.

This smile is a disgusting display of our isolationism in the world.

This makes makes violence against others seem funny.

This makes fun of people suffering from mental illnesses

Around 160,000 people died from the bombs we dropped on Japan during WWII. Need I say more?

And this allows people to get away with saying all sorts of offensive things on the forum without a care in the world. I am so disappointed with DU.
