(15,381 posts)I assume he's using the GI Bill (passed by democrats) and possibly Pell Grants to pay for college.

(62,270 posts)With GI Bill, Stafford Loans and Pell Grants the guy can go to school for the next decade and not have to do an ounce of work. Loans would be big though, so I'd hope he actually gets the education so he can get a job when he's done.

(32,080 posts)When he quits his current job, he gets first dibs at any government job where he meets the basic qualifications--over non-veterans who are more qualified than he is, as will his wife.

(525 posts)Either 5 point for veteran status, or 10 point for if service-connected-disability. In a case where the civvie that is moderately more qualified for the job, the points may or may not make up the difference.
I know plenty of guys that got out after I retired that thought just like he does, and many of them are still unemployed after 2 years.

(32,080 posts)This also now hold true for veterans. I have been told numerous times by folks in the federal government who are in positions to hire people that, "If a vet applies for the job, it's going to go to him. That's just how it is."
NavyDem
(525 posts)That appears to be a change since I just retired 2 years ago (January, 2010). This would not apply for myself or my spouse, as I am not dead, or 100% service connected disabled.

(37,648 posts)when the Republicans get that "small government" they want, and fire tens of thousands of govt workers?
Hey, it just occurred to me. As a taxpayer, I, as one of the 99%, pays his salary! That makes me his boss!

(525 posts)I have a steady job with a regular paycheck, great benefits and lots of room for promotion (I pulled myself up by my bootstraps, and besides, theres nowhere to go but up from E-1).
Next year, I will be paid to go to college and graduate with guaranteed position making a decent salary (Screw you, I got my education through socialism, and I'm better than every other college grad. Never mind that 25-30% of new college grads are unemployed).
...and I'm not getting any free handouts (except for housing, food, education, clothing, hell every one of my basic needs is met. The paycheck is just a bonus. Again, Screw you, I got mine).

(24,411 posts)"Paid to go to college"? "Guaranteed position?" Those sound kind of like "free handouts" to me. How many people have jobs that offer anywhere near those kind of fantastic benefits?
Of course, what he probably doesn't realize (or care about) is that his next Republican "boss" will probably have him and his co-workers on the front lines of the right-wing's next big "military adventure".
BTW welcome back Berni! Haven't seen you post for awhile!

(171,057 posts)He doesn't 'have it made' necessarily. When he grows up, he might hate what he does and might 'get out' before he 'has it made'. Then, he'll have to find a job with skills that won't necessarily translate to what's out there.
Oye.

(525 posts)But I can tell by the lack of rank insignia on the collar that he is an E-1. Usually, you make E-2 automatically after 9 months as an E-1.
This kid doesn't have the first clue what he's gonna face when he gets out.

Dude clearly doesn't get it.
It's nothing but hard work and sacrifice down here.
But there's never any pay off.
That's what all the complaining is about.
Time to grow up friend.
Don't assume that if somebody hasn't had the best of luck they must have some character flaw.
BTW somebody said the picture looks photoshopped. I think maybe, can't tell, but the quality seems kind of bad.
