A Republic, which they've never had, or a Monarchy with whomever is the current descendent of the last Scottish King?

(725 posts)they intend to remain in the EU which makes no sense. The idea of becoming independent from Britain but remaining subservient to Brussels seems to defeat any notions of self governance. Countries in the EU have 80% of their laws written by unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats in Brussels!

(21,786 posts)And Salmond wants to retain the Queen as head of state (which would not be an issue since the Queen is already the head of state of the various Commonwealth Realms including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc).
I expect that "no" will win in the referendum, though.

(1,273 posts)We could offer them a Bonnie Prince Charlie:
the Wittelsbacher family (who were the kings of Bavaria) are descendents of the Stuarts, the youngest one is Karl Rupprecht Prinz von Bayern.
But I really hope that the Scots do not separate. That would damage not only Britain but the rest of Europe, too. There are so many unsolved questions, the search for solutions and the negotiations would probably paralyse parts of the EU.

(56,582 posts)so HRH Elizabeth II will still be Queen of Scots. But she's head of state of an absurd number of countries (Nigeria, Jamaica, Canada, etc.) so what that practically means I'm not sure. I don't think the "Yes" movement is (small "r" republican, though the republicans who do exist are for it.
