Florida Civil Rights Association wants Sanford Police Chief's photo off website.

Maybe they need to make that change more permanent? Does anybody know about the FL CRA? Sounds like an organization I would love to join if they have an Orlando chapter.

They need to start with Chief Bill Lee and continue on to Wolfinger. And then they need to open up a department for complaints that Wolfinger never investigated.

Group demands removal of Sanford police chief's photo

The Florida Civil Rights Association wants Sanford city officials to remove Chief Bill Lee's photo from their government website and building because he is no longer in charge.

The Orlando-based group said changing police leadership was a step forward to restoring community trust but should be taken further.

The group's president, J. Willie David, said that while interim chief Capt. Darren Scott is the face of the department, Lee's image should be removed.

"The city needs to implement this change until a permanent police chief is sworn in by [the] Sanford mayor," he said, calling the photo a slight against Scott and part of a "culture of indifference" toward minorities.

i think he's spot-on with this. the political issue with the SPD actions, especially Darren Scott's, have been destructive to the community and David is pointing a way to heal that. and, from what i've heard of Scott's interviews since this happened, i bet he agrees. there's been a timidity in his approach that suggests he gave into political pressure. that's just my observation based on his interview performance, but it's been shaky at best - like he doesn't believe the messages he's had to carry to the media.

Incredible right-wing knee jerk responses. Keep in mind that this article was printed BEFORE the prosecutor's announcement. I wonder how stupid they feel now?

giving up on humanity in general, or just in the mood for morbid curiousity.

i've had the honor of working with mr. david on our occupy's MLK day participation. he's a treasure.

Or is this something I should research through their website and drop in at their next local meeting?

good old boy police system today looks suspiciously like the good old boy police system of the 60s. I have a hard time getting beyond that thought.

It's like that era where the right-wing surged, 1998 to 2008, everything went to hell. In that ten year period we regressed one hundred years. There are still some wrongs that need to be righted.

it's always been a good old boy network, but there's an added layer of bad...it's been widely accepted, especially in the boonies, which Sanford is, that police leadership can make deals to bring in more money and favoritism. it's more polished now than when iwas a kid, but it's still part of the culture.

just an example, back in the 60s in central florida LE would cut deals with strip joints togo easy on them...otherwise known as shakedowns. today these kinds of arrangements are more sophisticated, but they're still part of the culture.
