McDonnell rejected plea deal where his wife, who he smeared to defend himself, would have walked.

"Maureen McDonnell relayed to federal prosecutors last summer that she felt responsible for the relationship with a wealthy businessman who had drawn legal scrutiny to Virginia’s first family, and her attorney asked whether the case could be resolved without charges for her husband.

But prosecutors showed no interest, according to people familiar with the conversation. Instead, months later, authorities proposed that then-Gov. Robert F. McDonnell plead guilty to one felony fraud charge that had nothing to do with corruption in office and his wife would avoid charges altogether. The governor rejected the offer, the people with knowledge of the conversations said."

Compare with the accepted theory of the prosecution:

“In pursuit of a lifestyle that they could ill afford, McDonnell and his wife eagerly accepted luxury items, designer clothes, free vacations and the businessman’s offer to pay the costs of their daughter’s wedding,” Caldwell said in a statement. “In return, McDonnell put the weight of the governor’s mansion behind the businessman’s corporate interests. The former governor was elected to serve the people of Virginia, but his corrupt actions instead betrayed them.”

at all even with a sweetheart deal, and now they are both under the bus rather firmly.

That is some mixed up relationship. Psychiatric evaluation should have been ordered for both.

Remember when he was the great white hope of the Republican party? A possible contender for the presidency in 2016?

Tonight he's a convicted criminal.
