-snip-
He argued to the Daily Beast that whatever wage gap exists is because women are more focused on raising children.
Take a hypothetical husband and wife who are both lawyers, Grothman told the website. But the husband is working 50 or 60 hours a week, going all out, making 200 grand a year. The woman takes time off, raises kids, is not go, go, go. Now they're 50 years old. The husband is making 200 grand a year, the woman is making 40 grand a year. It wasnt discrimination. There was a different sense of urgency in each person.
He then argued wage differences did not result from discrimination but because men care more about money.
You could argue that money is more important for men, he said. I think a guy in their first job, maybe because they expect to be a breadwinner someday, may be a little more money-conscious. To attribute everything to a so-called bias in the workplace is just not true.

There was fault on both sides, but Dad is still alive, and I need to clear this up. Sisters are still blaming him for everything, and he was just an observer.

(39,215 posts)house was from my father then he was very concerned about money but today it takes two wage earners to make a good living wage so what it he talking about? Even my mother had to go to work outside the home way back in the 40s so even then it was not just a man's world.

(1,439 posts)Or the flipside, that men value their leisure (defined as not-employed) time less than women.
I mean, it IS a fact that more men work and working men work more hours than working women. So what's the controversy here? That a republican said it? Or that he used it to try to explain the entire income gap? All the good studies control for the things he specifically mentions (work hours and experience). Does anybody here believe pay should not depend on work hours or experience?

(1,439 posts)Like I said, it's that or the flipside: they value their free-time less.
You know, it's ok to place different values on things. Personally I put a great deal more value on my free time than the average person (man or woman).

(23,272 posts)For less pay as well.
Its not okay for women to be stereotyped in ways that perpetuate destructive financial myths. Please do some basic research before you too buy into that crap.

(1,439 posts)Pretty much a given for me... when you see me write about any kind of work related statistics, I'm using BLS data.
Here's the data on this issue.
http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsaat22.htm
Among full time workers (35 hours or more per week):
Men: 43.4 hours
Women: 40.7 hours
Among all workers:
Men: 40.6 hours
Women: 35.6 hours
Note that it is impossible for the survey you linked to satisfy all three
1) Accurate
2) Using a representative sample
3) Be consistent with the US government data
riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)hardly enough to justify a despicable position that men simply value money more than women (and probably more an indicator of workplace discrimination against women than anything).
ALL people need and deserve to be paid adequately for their work. Women work just as hard (if not harder) than men and value money equally. Its sexist on the face of it (and beyond) to assume differently for any reason.
