Federal Judge: Government Broke Fair Labor Standards Act During Shutdown

Posted: August 7, 2014 by laborradio

By Doug Cunningham

Now that federal judge has ruled the government violated its own Fair Labor Standards Act by not paying workers on time during the federal government shutdown, the government has until September 2nd to respond. The law provides for damages to be paid these workers. The case – Martin et al. v. The United States Of America – could win damages for as many as 1.3 million government workers impacted by the shutdown.

I am a government employee who was paid during the government shutdown (after the fact). However, we were not paid on Fridays during the sequestration period. Perhaps that is what they are really suing for.
