Consumerism greatest threat.

An analogy to consumerism being the new idol of western peoples, especially Americans:

So how does materialism or consumerism hurt us? We are told to buy things we don't need and then our government tells us that the health of the economy is measured by people spending, spending, spending. We wind up with destroying our environment and burying ourselves in a bunch of cheap stuff from the big box stores.

We even look at each other through the lens of this ailment. I read an article that nudism is not as popular as it was and one of the reasons speculated is that people are less confident of their bodies as they used to be. The series "Killing Us Softly" deals with this ultimate objectification of people's bodies by Madison Avenue. And even though most people are probably aware that few if any magazine covers aren't photo shopped to make the celebrities and models look "ideal" the message is still ingrained in people's sub conscious.

People may even be less interested in relationships because they feel inadequate in today's society because obviously people should not have families if they aren't as wealthy as the people on TV.

I really wish we could have a repeat of the hippie era. We need to stop obsessing about money and status. Are we really a happier nation due to this new way of thinking????

Where are the religious "conservatives" when it comes to this issue? Consumerism was condemned by Protestants and Catholics alike prior to the Bernays blitz of the 1920s. Now they seem to have totally bought into it.
