Is your eye check up covered in USA? Why not do it before you leave?

Or are you going to go to a WALMART and use their services and just pay for it?

You might want to get some travel insurance in any event.

Blue Cross via Covered California. I should probably check with them and not assume I am not covered in Canada.

"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada," Palin said.

The irony, one guesses, is that Palin now views Canada's health care system as revolting: with its government-run administration!

Insurance is a better final plan. Guess she thought it was also it maybe next time she will just go to Russia.

They will treat you in emergencies until you are stable, and then if you need further treatment, you have to go back to your home country.

Famous example: Actress Natasha Richardson suffered her fatal head injury while skiing in Canada, so the Canadian hospital applied initial first aid, stabilized her, and then sent her back to the States.

I don't know of any legal way to receive routine care.

and I'm basing this on the fact that I used to live along the Alaska highway in Canada and we had many American tourists come through. Our local medical clinic had signs that had a list of the prices for those who didn't have insurance and were travelling through. So I think you can get the care if you pay for it up front - although I'm not sure that most clinics even have the capability of doing cash transactions...that particular medical clinic did because the doctors were also acupuncturists so did some cash transactions for that.

For an eye check up, it's private here so you can go anywhere and get one if you pay for it. It's been 3 years for me so I can't remember how much it was...$90? maybe? that was with contact lens prescription too. That's for optometrist - if you need a specialist you would need to go to a general practitioner at a clinic to get a referral. Again, if it was non-emergent you would probably have to pay although I'm not sure how they bill people who aren't citizens.
