The Southwest monsoon hath arrived, with a vengeance! (HEAVY PICS)

It hit south Arizona on July 3rd, big time. Today, the 5th was awesome! We had four lightning fires here in my ranger district, despite the heavy rains on the Santa Catalina mountains over the last three days. Those fires are small, single snags, that due to the late afternoon severe storms today, are in "monitor" status. Here 'ya go:

Severe storms roll in at about 5:15 PM today (7-5-2014)

"Dawn Patrol" today (7/5)

We got heavy rain three or four days within the last couple weeks, but that's it. Usually it's four weeks of solid downpour. I remember the second year I was here monsoon season was really wet. Now it's just hotter, and hotter.

This is a result of a weak Pacific storm joining up with a cold front filtering in from the east. Yes, the southwest has weird weather and a lot of our fronts move east-west as high pressure in the center of the country forces air through the mountain passes and on to the valleys in the west.

The true monsoon is a south to north flow, rain originating in Mexico and traveling north. It has also fizzled most years since the early 90s.

BTW, I like your new digs better than your old digs, but you are not as isolated. How are you reacting to the difference?

breathtaking.

Is this on Mt. Lemmon? My husband and I were talking about it - he's hiked all over the area and can't picture where it is.
