They ask you if you want them to do use your email to find contacts. I tell them 'no'. I am comfortable finding people I know manually.

2. That's called a business or partner 'relationship'

it has been going on since the internet became viable for businesses. They team up with other companies to share information and call them 'partners' touting how it is 'good for you'. In this case they have email providers as 'partners' who when you hand over your information will then give FB your contacts list because of their relationship. Many still have methods to let you 'opt out' of partners contacting you but they are and will move beyond letting you dictate what they can and can't do.

Even if they don't actually try to sell you something your provider can do it on the partner's behalf and thus haven't had the partner 'contact' you. And they of course can still share all the data they want without contacting you so they know what your interests are which lets them build profiles/databases on you for when you do business with that partner. Then they gain your habits/interests etc 'free' by analyzing what you do/like/etc.

This is the future and there are virtually no laws to protect any of our private information or stop companies from using what we 'provide' them willingly for convenience nor any in sight.

this has been going on for a long time but primarily with your collected data/buying habits/interests not email addresses. But FB isn't just about getting more FB members it is about getting more people into FB databses so they can collect their own information on you to sell to their partners or just pad their user numbers as how many potential 'customers' a company can reach on FB. Customers who they have data on like what you like to do, where you live, etc.

Who can get into your email account legally and use your information and contacts legally, anyone you or your email provider permits to do so.

As in you import a contact and FB knows your email provider, as in they have relationships with your email provider then that provider then hands over information from your contacts list/mail folders so you can add them to FB automatically. You may have given permission for them to do this by importing a contact once or they may do it as part of relationship/partnerships they already have with that provider for FB members.

Your 'information' refers to your 'profile' information, name, age, address, phone number, etc.

16. I might find it disturbing if they didn't need to get my email password to do it.

As it is, given that I understand what a password is, I grok that anyone or anything I give my password to is going to be inside my email, same as if I give someone the key to my house, they're going to be able to get in my house.

There are a couple simple solutions to this, starting with, don't give facebook any more information than you want to. They can't MAKE you.

20. I Do The Same Thing...

Firstly...the simple answer to avoid giving away your information, stay away from third party app, games and other "outside" FB functions.

Next...as you say, set up a Gmail or other free email account and use that as your FB address...separate from your normal email address. And if you still feel "compromised" then only use FB on a machine that doesn't have your emailer (many of us now have access to more than one machine).

I really don't lose any sleep as to "losing my privacy" out here as I only put on the innerwebs what I expect everyone to see. Ugly truth is every time you post on a website you leave your IP address an anyone with some smarts can trace that address and find out who its connected to.
