George Takei Blasts High Court's Birth Control Ruling, Calls For Hobby Lobby Boycott

Actor and human rights activist George Takei condemned the Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby ruling Monday as a "stunning set-back for women's reproductive rights" in a post Tuesday on his personal blog, That Blog Is So Takei.
"Hobby Lobby is not a church. It's a business -- and a big one at that. Businesses must and should be required to comply with neutrally crafted laws of general applicability," Takei wrote. "Your boss should not have a say over your healthcare. Once the law starts permitting exceptions based on 'sincerely held religious beliefs' there's no end to the mischief and discrimination that will ensue."
In a 5-4 decision Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that closely held corporations can opt out of providing contraception coverage if it violates their sincere religious beliefs, a ruling Takei viewed as potentially skewed by the plaintiffs' Christian faith.
"In this case, the owners happen to be deeply Christian; one wonders whether the case would have come out differently if a Muslim-run chain business attempted to impose Sharia law on its employees," Takei said.
The "Star Trek" actor also criticized the craft store chain for spending millions of dollars on employee retirement plans that are invested in a variety of manufacturers that produce the same contraceptive products the company protested in its lawsuit.
"It also buys most of its inventory from China, where forced abortions are common," Takei added. "The hypocrisy is galling."
Takei urged readers to boycott Hobby Lobby and other for-profit businesses that deprive their employees of health coverage based on invasive religious beliefs.
"We are a nation that respects religious beliefs, but also the right not to have those beliefs imposed upon you by others. Our personal beliefs stop at the end of our noses," Takei concluded. "The only way such companies ever learn to treat people with decency and tolerance is to hit them where it counts -- in their pocketbooks."

Thom Hartmann said last week that there has never been a successful boycott.
Is he accurate?

(10,558 posts)Stephanie Miller has been an outspoken critic of boycotting talk radio. According to her the Rush Limbaugh boycott has hurt her show and all talk radio shows. This vid has a bit from her but as a fan of the show I have heard her discuss this topic quite a bit more extensively.

(2,347 posts)and I was never going to walk into that place anyway, once I'd heard about them taking this case to the SC, but the problem is what Takei stated: that the SC has now carved out a little place where the gov't can't go against some company owner's "sincerely held religious beliefs".
Actually, it's worse. The gutter level reasoning in this decision is truly breathtaking. They specifically stated that something like blood transfusions, which are objected to by Jehovah's Witnesses and maybe other looney toons for all I know, aren't included in this decision. I didn't even bother to look at why, because whatever the reason was it's not worth the time to read it. The fact is they went after contraception, and only contraception, and went after only women's contraception. There is nothing in the Constitution or even in the Bible to back up their ridiculous reasoning. It's all based on their own personal preferences.
Between this and the 2000 decision where they stopped the election recount, I've lost all respect for the Supreme Court as an institution. All. Forever. They're never getting it back.

(67,086 posts)were just a religious outfit, we could handle that, but this is now way over the line. This is blurring the separation of government and religion. Imagine, if one wanted to overrule provisions of ACA based on other memberships. To me, the SCOTUS ruling is utter bullshit. To me, religion is utter bullshit.

(53 posts)Businesses are not religious endeavors so their religious philosophies are pointless if their employees are forced to follow them like oh say in the Spanish Inquisition or The Dark Ages because then they defeat the purpose of the whole idea of accepting Christ. Since most fundie types think "Prosperity Jesus" is real they feel it's okay to turn the shield of religious freedom into a sword that must be bowed down to. It's unacceptable for them to hold a woman's ability to carry hostage on the terms of "religious freedom" or at all.

(18,671 posts)I went into Hobby Lobby once and didn't buy anything because all they had was crap from China. You know, that country that is all for birth control, infanticide, ditching females into orphanages, and all the things certain people who like to call themselves "Christians" can overlook if it makes them an extra f*cking penny off of all the backs of sweatshop workers. In other words, they have absolutely nothing I need. Their half off stuff wasn't even worth 1/4 of the sale price. It will be too easy for me to boycott this store, especially when Michael's and JoAnn's has better stuff at better prices. Yes, they both have cheap crap from China, but they don't oppress over half the population, so that makes the stuff they're selling better in some small way.

(58,284 posts)passed a law respecting the establishment of a religion.
There is no excuse or logical defense for it based on the 1st Amendment.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution
The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights.

(12,151 posts)I'm not an artist (or a scrapbooker!) but I occasionally buy art supplies for various reasons, including as gifts for the artists in my life.
Texas Art Supply has Pilot Razor Point II (also known as "crack in pen form" for 30% off reg. price. I've bought from Dick Blick before and they have a ton of good merchandise at good prices.
I'm afraid my boycott of Hobby Lobby will do no good, because I've never shopped there and wasn't planning to anyway. I wonder what people like me could do (within legal bounds) to hurt them financially? Buy their stupid crap and return it for a refund? Wander around the store randomly moving merchandise to the wrong department? (I don't like that one so much -- just hurts the poor schlubs who have to restock the shelves.) Stage weird events like Flying Spaghetti Monster revivals (or Satanic rituals) in their stores? (Sounds fun, but could result in arrest.)
I'd be interested to know people's ideas for creative disruption of HL's business.

(57,936 posts)stores and send the receipts to Hobby Lobby. That's what makes an impression. This is especially a good idea for people who shop for a lot of junky Christmas decorations.
How many DUers have ever been in a Hobby Lobby store?
I have. Even though I love to knit and sew, the experience was pretty ugly -- mostly imported junk.

Thanks for the idea.
Also considering getting a sign and standing right in front of their store since the SCOTUS disallowed buffer zones, I shoudl be fine. LOL. Want to bet the local police don't make me move?
