Mac Tippins will spend four to five months on duty at the Lemmon Rock Lookout searching for fires.
The first lookout on Lemmon Rock was built in 1902. Since then, the site has been used to watch for wildfires in the valleys surrounding Tucson and other lands as far away as the Little Dragoon Mountains near Willcox.
The current building on Lemmon Rock dates to 1936.
Nestled in the pines of Mt. Lemmon, the Lemmon Rock Lookout sits on an outcrop of rock from which much of the Tucson metro area is visible.
As this year's new fire lookout, Tippins will actively search for fires for a standard workweek, but also be on call any time he is in the tower, which also serves as his residence.

(25,370 posts)The Arizona Public Media (NPR/PBS) team, under Zac Ziegler, did an excellent job with this. I sent an email to a friend today about this saying, "ZZ is Tops!"
The voice-overs were extremely well done, given my rambling (which, because of ZZ's editing, did not show). Zac saw some of my photography in the lookout, and decided on the spot to make some of my work the center piece of the program. The music was actually what was playing in the lookout (Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" . I wish it had been Rachmaninov's "Variations on a Theme by Paganini!" THAT would have spiced things up!
Ironically, I had just sent this link to the DU Admins. I thought they would get a kick out of it. Never though it would be posted in GD! Thanks Ptah!
I did tell the Admins about the strong DU presence in Tucson. I have always thought Tucson and Flagstaff to be the saner parts of Arizona. I also related a meeting I had hiking in the Wilderness of Rocks after work yesterday: it was with a wonderful woman who had photographed the Gabriel Giffords/Mark Kelly wedding for the NY Times. I saw her work (lots of environmental stuff), including Gabby Gifford's wedding photos: AWESOME!

(32,983 posts)Tucsons public radio and television broadcaster is bracing for fallout from a
$2 million funding cut being phased in by the University of Arizona starting
next month.
Arizona Public Media, which operates radio station KUAZ and TV station KUAT
from the campus, will see its annual income slashed by $400,000 starting July 1,
with additional cuts each year until 2019.
Last school year, the UA provided $2.6 million in cash contributions to the
public broadcaster, about one-quarter of its $11.7 million budget. The UA
cash portion will drop to $600,0000 a year once the five-year phase-in for
cuts is complete.
The UA also provides another $2 million or so a year in in-kind services such
as human resources support and utilities, UA spokesman Chris Sigurdson said.
That support will continue, he said.
