Snip>
"From the beginning, most people on the left were against going into Iraq. I wasnt.... Liberals, you were right. We shouldnt have."
Beck made this surprising declaration on his radio show on Tuesday while discussing the widening rift between Republicans and Democrats. He urged both parties to come together to oppose another war in Iraq.

We're ahead of the curve. We always have been. The stupids are catching up. Finally.
This should cast a different light on the word, "liberal", now, shouldn't it?

(13,141 posts)Controversial televangelist Pat Robertson recently denounced the decision of former President George W. Bush to go to war in Iraq, linking it to the recent outbreak of violence in the Middle Eastern country.
On a Monday broadcast of "The 700 Club," the former Bush supporter was asked by a viewer during his "Bring It On" segment about the current situation in Iraq.
"George Bush went into Iraq with approval from Congress, but with disapproval of most other countries. We broke it, now it is our responsibility to fix it. Is there hope? How does this fit into the plans of Almighty God?" asked the viewer.
Regarding the onset of war over 10 years ago, Robertson responded that "it was a great mistake to go in there."
"To sell the American people on Weapons of Mass Destruction, it was a lot of nonsense and we were sold a bill of goods," said Robertson.

History has proven over and over that Obama is level-headed and smart, he does the right thing every time. yet you still don't trust his judgment after 6 years. Why?
Do you trust anybody?

(37,156 posts)His full "liberals were right" quote retains his caricature of liberals:
Now, in spite of the things I felt at the time when we went into war, liberals said: We shouldnt get involved. We shouldnt nation-build. And there was no indication the people of Iraq had the will to be free. I thought that was insulting at the time. Everybody wants to be free. They said we couldnt force freedom on people. Let me lead with my mistakes. You are right. Liberals, you were right. We shouldnt have.
That's not what the anti-war people were saying. Even on this narrow part of it, we weren't saying "they had no will to be free" or "we couldn't force freedom on them". We were noting the distinct lack of a plan to deal with Iraq's many internal fissures, whereas the Bushies were talking as if a democracy would form out of sunshine and lollipops, and had no "Plan B" if any part of their whole string of assumptions didn't pan out.

(9,214 posts)Liberals obviously need allies in stopping this rush to war because we haven't seemed to be able to stop it on our own.
Conservatives don't seem to be able to think on their own so need leaders to tell them what to think, Beck is one of those leaders, at least on this point he and Robertson can start to turn the tide in our favor, I wouldn't expect much on the social agenda.
Who do you think is going to change the current thinking of conservatives? President Obama?

(23,730 posts)similarly, when Dems and the New Atheists banged the war drums in the name of pacification and civilization 2001-present, that actually had a disproportionate effect in favor of support for the war, by preventing opponents of Islamophobia from saying it was just the fundies acting up again; if A makes fun of B's saying India's poor because it has more than one god or Florida gets hurricanes because DisneyWorld has Gay Days, but A agrees with B that sharia is just around the corner in Manchester or Cheyenne and we have to Stop Those Dusky Savages two continents away, then that makes the latter claim seem plausible: it's truthiness

(6,828 posts)Please don't jump to the conclusion that I'm some sort of rightie troll. I just like to do oppo research, which has in the -past resulted in a trial by a jury of my DU peers.
I facebooked the vid yesterday. If this were the only thing Beck ever said publicly, I would contend he was the greatest journalist in recent history. However, knowing something of his infuriating body of work, I understand the DU concerns Glenn may be more about repositioning his career than actual professional journalism. I do a lot more FB now simply because I get to engage and see the other point of view of my conservative friends. DU is preaching to the Choir and FB is good for reaching across the aisle to the conservative side. Some may be aghast that I can even compliment him, but I try to be fair and call 'em the way I see 'em.
My FB post;
You can tell the universe is spinning off it's axis when Jim Be***** posts something from Glenn Beck on his Facebook Wall. Interesting discussion about maybe we don't disagree with each other as much as we were lead to believe by our MSM? And maybe we have more in common than we have differences? I predict Glenn will be guesting on the Rachel Maddow show within a week!
Wow! This is the first time in my life I've listened to Glenn for more than 15 seconds and I am impressed. Listened to all 15 minutes and 35 seconds. He has one damn good radio voice! And what he has to say here is both very, very courageous, and also very patriotic. The sign of a good critical thinker is one that can revise their point of view based on new and/or better information.

So we must ask why?
My speculation:
1) they realize that being in favor of anymore action in Iraq is hugely unpopular and if Obama sends troops back in they are positioned to blame him. - while at the same time blaming him if he doesn't
2) they are trying to get a meme they can beat Hillary up with - "she voted for the war."
