Manufacturing Consent, by Herman and Chomsky was written about 32 years ago!The fact that these prophetic words are unknown to millions due to willful censorship by the media is tragic; because they call out the mainstream media for what it is: an institution that parrots the words of power for access to power.
However, it is not conspiratorial as Chomsky has pointed out in numerous books and speeches since Manufacturing Consent. It is what he calls institutional behavior.
The media (and others) use the phrase, "conspiracy theory", to disarm debate and end the discussion. But in fact, conspiracies DO happen. There are thousands of people locked up every year for conspiring to steal, murder, commit fraud, etc. This of course means that police and district attorneys must have investigated and prosecuted these crimes by first formulating their own conspiracy theories.
Basically, people will do what they perceive to be in their best interest.
For example, the cop who intimidates an African-American voter in Florida doesn't need to conspire with the election official who throws a box of ballots in the Ohio River to get GW Bush elected. They are simply doing what they think is in their best interest = no conspiracy.
The same is true for the media, as described in Herman and Chomsky's great book. It is a must-read.

(62,325 posts)For a while, it worked when they had control of the media. What amazes me is that they ever allowed the internet to get this far. I know they are trying to rein it in now, but it was a hole in their plans to totally 'control the message' as they ADMIT.
'Guest of Putin'! I've seen that right here and have corrected it and will continue to do so whenever I see it.
The propaganda infiltrates everywhere. But it IS pretty obvious so not as effective as it used to be when none of us ordinary people could even imagine them lying the way they do. Now we are all at least ten years older and wiser and the next generation is a lot wiser.

(36,988 posts)On June 1, NBC's Meet the Press unveiled new polling numbers about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. They weren't very revealing. What was more instructive was how the show presented its debate over Snowden's actions.
The main participants in the discussion were right-wing Crossfire host Newt Gingrich and hawkish former Democratic Rep. Jane Harman.
snip .... all the talk you see in the meme
The only hint of dissent on the panel came in a brief comment from Time's Rana Foroohar, who pointed out that while she doesn't trust Snowden"I would have more of a belief in Edward Snowden if he wasn't a guest of Vladimir Putin"that skepticism is spread out equally: "The administration has been evasive and has on occasion lied about its espionage tactics."
So the main debate about Snowden boils down to one side saying he's a traitor and the other side saying he should come home and do prison time, perhaps as a lesson to children.
