Experts: Racism Played Role in Santa Barbara Murder Spree (misogyny and entitlement were factors)

This time, we’ve seen misogyny and men’s sense of entitlement added to the usual suspects of guns and mental illness. We’d suggest another variable be added to the lethal equation: race.
But if we want to understand how this happened, and how to prevent it in the future, we are going to have to confront race. Let’s look at the facts. In the last 20 years, all but one of the school shootings were committed by a white man.

Rodger’s enemies were not only the beautiful white girls who he felt constantly turned him down for dates and rejected him sexually. His rage was also toward all the men of color he felt those white girls chose over him.
In his manifesto he writes: “How could an inferior, ugly black boy be able to get a white girl and not me? I am beautiful, and I am half white myself. I am descended from British aristocracy. He is descended from slaves. I deserve it more.”

The commonality among these shooters is, overwhelmingly, race and gender. This is a voice of white male aggrieved entitlement. Our willingness to assign blame to individuals, at the expense of any attention to the underlying trends in these repeated cases of white male violence, allows this violence to continue

Michael Kimmel and Cliff Leek are in the sociology department at Stony Brook University.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, discovered Rodger’s postings after the shooting, publishing them on the organization’s HateWatch blog. Rodger’s comments, while centered on the idea of meeting women, had a significantly racist bent.

In a January message titled “Saw a black guy sitting with 4 white girls,” he wrote:
Today I drove through the area near my college and saw some things that were extremely rage-inducing.
I passed by this restaurant and I saw this black guy chilling with 4 hot white girls. He didn’t even look good.
Then later on in the day I was shopping at Trader Joe’s and saw an Indian guy with 2 above average White Girls!!!
What rage-inducing sights did you guys see today? Don’t you just hate seeing these things when you go out? It just makes you want to quit life.

That same month, when an Asian poster asked if wearing certain shoes would help him attract women, Rodger responded:
Shoes won’t help you get white girls. White girls are disgusted by you, silly little Asian.
After the Asian man posted photos of himself posing with a white girl, Rodger wrote:

Full Asian men are disgustingly ugly and white girls would never go for you. You’re just butthurt that you were born as an asian piece of shit, so you lash out by linking these fake pictures. You even admit that you wish you were half white. You’ll never be half-white and you’ll never fulfill your dream of marrying a white woman. I suggest you jump off a bridge.

Plays a large part in the majority of them. I only wish they didnt almost always end these things by killing themselves so that we could look much more closely at motivations and contributing factors.

8. Maybe bigotry, but as I have been informed here on DU, only white people can be racists.

As I have been taught, racism is (basically) individual bigotry added to systematic prejudice against non-whites. As this person self identified as eurasian and/or 1/2 white, he could not be a racist, any more than President Obama could be (as he too is 1/2 white). Maybe this 'expert' that calls this racism should do a bit more research into the social sciences.
